Bears running back Thomas Jones goes in for 7-yard TD in NFC divisional playoff victory over Seattle Seahawks as Chicago sticks to ground in march to Super Bowl, obviously impressing Jets in the process.

The Jets were after the Jones brothers for nearly a year. Concerned about Curtis Martin's surgically repaired knee, they almost pulled off a draft-day trade last April for Cowboys running back Julius Jones. Late yesterday, GM Mike Tannenbaum, still trying to replace Martin, finalized a trade for Julius' older brother, the Bears' Thomas Jones. The seven-year vet, who cracked the 1,200-yard rushing mark in each of the last two seasons, fills a major need for the Jets - and he didn't cost them a draft pick, per se.
The Jets traded a second-round pick (37th overall), acquired last draft day in a trade with the Commanders, for Jones and the Bears' second-round choice (63rd overall).

Neither team confirmed the trade last night because it's contingent on a physical and a contract extension, according to an NFL source. The contract is only a formality, as Jones has agreed in principle to a long-term deal that includes about $12 million in guarantees, another source confirmed. He was entering the final year of his contract, due to make $2.7 million in 2007.

The Jets and Jones' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, were granted a 24-hour negotiating window by the Bears. Rosenhaus declined to comment. The trade likely will be made official today. Jones, in New York for a promotional appearance with his brother, visited the Jets' facility last night to meet coach Eric Mangini.

Basically, the Jets obtained a proven No. 1 back for dropping 26 slots in the second round. That may
sound like an absolute steal, but based on
the point system of trade-value chart used by teams, they landed Jones for the equivalent of a high third-round pick - still a good deal for the Jets. They have two second-round choices, including their own (59th overall).

Jones didn't come cheaply - it's a lot of money for a back who turns 29 in August - but the Jets, eerily quiet over the first three days of free agency, have $17 million in cap space.

Obviously, there was plenty of motivation for both sides to hammer out a deal. Jones, who wasn't comfortable sharing the workload with Cedric Benson the last two seasons, wanted out of Chicago. The Jets, whose trade for Kevan Barlow last August failed miserably (he was released two weeks ago), considered Jones the only feature-type back available in a rapidly dwindling market.

They flirted with a few free-agent backs, including ex-Titan Travis Henry, who signed a five-year contract yesterday with the Broncos that includes $12 million in guarantees.
Henry's agent, Hadley Engelhard, said early yesterday that he had had "several" conversations with Tannenbaum over the weekend. More talks were planned for later in the day, but Henry accepted Denver's offer around midday.
Unbeknown to many, the Jets expressed an interest in trading for Jones last summer, when they came to the realization that Martin's days probably were over. At the time, the Bears weren't willing to break up their 1-2 punch in the backfield.

A determined Jones rushed for 1,210 yards (11th in the NFL), a 4.1 average and six touchdowns. In the NFC Championship Game, he came through with 123 yards and two touchdowns, adding 112 yards in a losing effort in the Super Bowl. Chicago management, apparently convinced that Benson can run the show, finally granted Jones his wish to be traded.

The Jets' running game could use a spark. Using the committee approach last season, they averaged only 3.5 yards per carry, 30th in the NFL. Jones isn't a breakaway back - his longest run last season was only 30 yards - but he's tough and consistent, having averaged at least 4.0 per rush in each of the last four seasons. He and Leon Washington should comprise a solid 1-2 punch.

OH, 'BOY: The Jets were closing in on a deal last night with former Cowboys DE Kenyon Coleman. His agent, Jordan Woy, said in an e-mail, "We are still talking, but it is looking very good." ... DE David Bowens (Dolphins) also visited the Jets yesterday. QB Marques Tuiasosopo (Raiders) is scheduled to arrive later in the week. ... FB Darian Barnes (Dolphins) arrives today.

Gotta wonder if the rumor about Jets close to signing Marc Colombo got started when someone saw Coleman as the target & confused it with Colombo. Anyway, just a thought cause I think the Colombo to Jet rumor has been disproved.

Good riddance. With Canty, Spears, Hatcher, Ratliff & Stephen Bowen around, we didn't need Coleman.

It always hurts to lose experienced quality depth.

But he is replaceable. Unlike Colombo is at this juncture.

Does anyone besides me think the Jets basically had their way with the Bears?

It looks that way.

Frankly, it appears to the Bears are headed to oblivion. They have not handled anything right since the season ended.

I can't believe they got thomas Jones for basically nothing. That is insane. Jones is/was by far the best back in Chicago.

I have to believe the bears knew jones would want a new deal soon and they dont want to deal with that.

Also, they must have a group of running backs targeted somewhere in the first 3 rounds that they feel will be available when they pick to replace him.

Time will tell who did good in this. If the bears find an outstanding runner in the draft and thomas jones gets injured or struggles...the bears will then look good.

Agreed. They rather resemble the Cardinals in bumbling if you forget they were in Miami a month ago. Meanwhile the Cardinals have made some solid moves in coaching staff and player personnel.

I think the apocolypse is upon us.

But if they get nothing out of the draft and benson continues to disapoint, then they start going into the toilet. Especially if grossman does not improve- he won't have a strong running game to help him out.

I think it might be in our best interest to stop talking about our RT. The more he gets mentioned, the more chance he has of popping up on radar around the league. Not that he already isn't but it can't hurt.

Benson and Lovie I think have been sharing the man chowder. I have seen nothing from Benson but he is all that Lovie talks about. Lovie might be one of those coaches that can't admit Benson was a bust and play the best RB, Jones. So he just gets rid of the problem.

Not really. He was a solid defender - he played better than Spears at times.

I'm going to disagree with the status quo on this. Thomas Jones has been in the NFL for 8 YEARS. The odds are he may only have a few seasons (lets say 3 or 4) left in him. Jones has become a better back over the years by improving his blocking and whatnot, but he is still merely a solid NFL starting back --- not a star.

Benson may be an immature guy and a bad teammate by some accounts, but there was a reason this guy went as high as he did in the draft --- and it wasn't due to aceing the combines. He stunk it up in chicago until the middle of last season. Over the last half of the season, he out ran Thomas Jones. Benson was a guy who was better at picking up the tough yards than Jones. He frankly is a better runner, although not as fast.

Chicago was looking at having to give Jones a bigger deal or alienating veteran players. They were looking at keeping a source of friction around in a Jones/Benson relationship. Instead they proactively suprised everyone by dealing Jones quickly --- deflating the issue before it had a chance to become an issue. That isn't really a bad idea. It forces Benson to step up his professionalism by making him the focus of the offense. Benson no longer has the luxury of sitting on the sideline and tearing his teammate for not getting it done. Now it is his job to get it done.

Benson reminds me a lot of Emmitt. Cancer when they aren't getting most of the carries; positive franchise back when they are. Benson is also a tough inside running franchise back with questionable speed.

You can argue that NY got a great deal. They did. That isn't uncommon for a team that picks up a 4-9 year veteran RB. St. Louis gave up a second for Marshall Faulk. KC signed Priest Holmes as a free agent. Happens all the time.

But I think you'd be wrong to argue that Chicago totally bit it with this deal. The odds of missing with an end of the 2nd pick are substantially higher than with an early second. Chicago could easily pull a starter with that pick. That's not bad for an 8 year vet lost in an addition by subtraction deal.

Coleman always seemed he could be a good player, but never was consistant, just showed flashes, and never broke out, but not a bust either. He was past his 3rd year rule. This will not hurt us. I believe he would have been replaced anyway with a draft pick or FA.

The Jets are quietly building a strong team. Age and contract dollars make this deal less lop-sided, but it's still basically a steal to get a running game by moving down 20+ places in the 2nd with a pick you stole from the Washington Commanders.

Maybe he'll finally get to shine in his new surroundings. Been in the league for what, 5-6 years now and still not starting? Good depth somewhere else BUT I'm ready to go w/ our youngins'. Spears should show why he was a 1st rounder under Wade's system along w/ our other D-linemen.
