Seasons after season; fans, coaches, announcers and players criticizes the people that try to enforce the rules. Like the police officers on the street, football officials are called endless names and screamed at. Now, I would also say, many calls are missed and other calls are not fouls at all.

So unless A-I is eventually going to be the future of NFL and eliminating the human referees on the field, how about these NFL players, who complain about the officiating, become referees AFTER their NFL careers. They played the game, have a better knowledge of it and believe they are better than what is on the field.

Instead of going into the media angle, *****ing about the zebras, IMPROVE the game by staying on the field and put on the strips.

Finally a logical solution, ex players millionaires who after retirement get offers for extra loads of cash to work on the media, should brush them off to become under paid Refs.

Not really sure it is about the money--sure it will be drawn that way-- but if the current officials "stink" season after season, then get former/retired NFL players to improve the sport with the expertise/knowledge. And I say, things will improve but the arguing will still happen.

Under paid???? Refs make on average $205,000 a season plus playoff money, bonus's and up to $50,000 for the Superbowl......If I wasn't old as dirt, where do I sgn up, plus the bonus is I'd spend time away from the wife!!!

Where do you sign up???? Every location is depleted with referees. Contact your location officials association. Pick any sport you want. All need people.

I don't know if this is the answer, although I have no doubt there are lots of ex-players who would like to continue to be part of the game. Believe it or not, the current refs train for years and only the best supposedly get promoted to the NFL. Would an ex-player be willing to train for a couple of years before becoming an NFL ref? I don't think any have yet, have they? It is an interesting thought though.

I will make the comparison to baseball umpires. They make mistakes all the time and for them the rules are simple. If the ball is in the strike zone, call it a strike. If not, call it a ball. If a runner is tagged when he is not on the base he is out, If he is on the base before the tag, he is safe. They get it wrong anyway. I played baseball, and I was a pitcher, so I think I saw my fair share of umps who did know know or see the strike zone. Some in my favor and some squeezed the strike zone on me. The fact is, umps, and refs are humans and they make mistakes. Maybe someday, AI will be able to watch every player in real time and flag every infraction, but that might actually be worse.

The best answer to get the calls right might be some kind of booth review, but games are already taking over 3 hours to get through, and some games seem to go one longer than that.

I think the league has to first admit to the fans they have a problem. Then come up with some ideas how to fix it. First admitting the bad calls would be a good start.

They're still going to get their marching orders from the NFL office to "focus on" specific things in the first half, not focus on some things in the second half, etc etc. the officials are not acting on their own.

Full time police officers > non full time NFL refs.

Focus and accountability have taken a sport adjustment. Scrutiny is on quarterback injury and passing game protections in route. Line of scrimmage protections are also intense. Other wise you get away with non injurious infractions. That is arbitrary and situational at best.

College officiating teams often are able to enter the NFL if there is a record in collegiate officiating consistency.

At least half the referees are selectively blind. Someone posted a picture somewhere from the Miami game. Two Miami OLmen clearly had handfuls of Cowboys jerseys holding them from chasing the play while another OLman was tackling a Cowboy. Three blatant penalties not called on one play in which the Miami RB gained about 15 yards. Ridiculous, the NFL referees are really bad, or they are corrupt.

I feel like this year is most I've seen announcers and the "ref expert" on the crew go against the calls being made.

Then get former NFL players to officiate games but they will not so......same with people complaining about cops but no one wants to become one themselves.Easier to complain so enjoy

My issue is not with the officials. In every sport, whether that’s Tennis, Soccer, Football, whatever they make mistakes. That’s human. Obviously particularly poor performing officials should be held accountable but by and large, I believe they are. The problem with the NFL in particular is that officials are directed to call penalties in far too many situations where it’s essentially a judgement call. Everything from holding to pass interference can be interpreted differently by different people. In my opinion these penalties should almost never be called outside of the most egregious instances where it’s clearly just a cynical play in response to someone getting beat. All these ticky tack fouls should not be called. I don’t think this would change anything about how the game is played. Players would stop begging for flags all the time and instead focus on fighting through minor contact or small holds. Players ultimately do whatever gives them the best chance to win, and right now, that is oftentimes creating minor contact and begging for flags. The NFL directive in how games are officiated needs to be looked at rather then the officials constantly being blamed for incompetence. The rules currently make it impossible for the officials to do their job well.

I’ve noticed that too. Even Papa Blandino has disagreed with several calls against the Cowboys. I’ve always felt the networks sided with the officials and the league. Notice sometimes you don’t get a replay of a crucial call and they haphazardly rush to a commercial break.
