Players were part time athletes back then working regular jobs in offseason. Training Camp was to get into shape .Back in the day when Training Camp was real, no country club environment existed back in the day.
It was survival of the fittest, contracts were not the determining factor.

My uncle turned down a contract to play in NFL from Lombardi in 1961 cause it wasn’t enough to leave his regular job , move his wife and infant child to Green Bay with a 1,000 signing bonus and 10,000 a year.
