One stat that must be different than last year

This team cannot lead the league in penalties and expect to have a successful year. I know it's only preseason. They've got time to work things out. I wonder if there are any stats on how well or poorly penalty leaders did. I'd bet there's never been a team that led the league in penalties and then went on to win the Super Bowl. If that's ever happened, I would be very surprised. I remember penalties were a big reason for the failure of the 1986 team. That team actually started 6 and 2, but ended the season 7 and 9. There were other reasons, including the starting QB getting hurt, but I remember the frustration of the team making some great play, only to have it called back due to a false start or a holding penalty.

I'd bet if you listed all the teams who led the league in penalties, most of them would be teams that accomplished very little. Our having won our division and then one and one in the playoffs would probably be on the upper end. The most successful teams tend to be well disciplined with less penalties, granted it's not possible to never be penalized.

I would estimate that only half those penalties were legit. The refs had a horrible game.

Pre-season for them, too. The bad news is poor reffing can cost guys on the bubble valuable playing time which means coaches can’t evaluate them.

Good thing there are a couple more games.

17 penalties first game of the season? Pathetic.

MM will be fired at the end of the season.

It's a huge issue.
Mac even stated it was going to be a priority.
That's what makes the Broncos game so alarming.
