Opera Attire?

Has anybody here ever been to the opera? I'm going to my first next weekend. What is appropriate attire? I'm figuring a polo shirt and blue jeans isn't going to cut it.

If it's anything like what I've been to, you'll see a whole range of styles of dress, from society types dressed to the nines to students dressed like, well, students. If you're going to enjoy the experience, I'd say hit it somewhere in the middle, where you're going to be comfortable in what you're wearing to physically tolerate sitting still for the duration of the show, and but you personally don't feel like a slob for the evening.

On the other hand, if you're going to impress a woman and/or her parents, all bets are off. Wear the tie if you can stand it.

Hope you enjoy it! I'm not the biggest fan overall of the genre, but sometimes the right combo of staging and approachable music (and often humor) can make for a really pleasant experience. Some operas are not for the faint of heart, so I hope you're going to something fun.

You'd probably look good in this:

Seriously, though, you can't go wrong with a suit.

Suit and tie is sufficient...

Oh, wait a sec, you're a Skins fan... in that case, an evening gown is the ticket... don't forget your pig's snout... :D

I believe traditionally, at big time venues, it's customary to wear a tuxedo if it's opening night.

After that, whatever you feel like wearing that shows respect for the venue and the price of the ticket. Dress slacks and a nice shirt is probably sufficient.

BTW have fun - I actually quite enjoy the opera, but haven't been in a couple of years.

I've been to the theatre in Baltimore, and if that event was any indication, a nice dark suit will suit you fine.

On a side note, several years ago I went to see Les Mis on Broadway... it was an evening performance on a weekend... and I was shocked at how casual people dressed for it. I figured Manhattan would be about as formal as you could get, but people were wearing jeans and polo shirts!

I believe Mike Rowe from "Dirty Jobs" used to be in the Baltimore Opera, not that it pertains to anything.
