The movie is located in Illinois, but was filmed in California. John Carpenter tried to make things look like the midwest but there are several occasions where palm trees, and various desert plants can be seen, including a huge palm tree in Michael Myers' front yard!
If you slammed a beer or took a shot every time a scene was clearly in Cali, you'd be pretty buzzed by the time it gets dark and the scares start.
