My thoughts on the QB class this year.

  • Maye and Williams both look like NFL quarterbacks trapped in college. The real acid test for NFL QBs IMO is can they make plays outside of structure, and beat a defense even when the defense makes a great playcall. Both of those guys do it regularly... Williams to a fault as he started pressing way too much this year. And they will tear you up within structure too. They are neck and neck in my book, and both are deserving of going #1 overall.

  • Daniels is like a Lamar Jackson starter kit. He has that kind of speed, he has a pretty good arm, but there are a lot of things that still need to be ironed out. He's a half-field, staredown reader, and he never looks to pass once he pulls the ball down and starts scrambling. NFL defenses will exploit the latter with heavy blitzes, like Lamar faced early in his career. Daniels has the tools to be an unguardable MVP quarterback like Jackson, but he's raw and there's real risk he won't get there. Maye and Williams just don't have that same downside.

  • Penix is scarily accurate. Most college QBs are trying to just hit a receiver, but he's trying to hit windows. High, low, leading, trailing, every pass he attempts is aimed at the most optimal position. Watch for it. IMO, he lacks the mobility to be a true out-of-structure gamebreaker, but he could be a really accurate distributor like Jared Goff or Tua. I think he's an NFL starter all day.

  • JJ McCarthy is most pundits' big question mark in this class, and I agree with that. He has some real tools, but he never put them together or even showed them off that much. He's tall, he can absolutely rocket balls downfield when he sets his feet, and he's actually pretty straight-line fast. But his accuracy sucked, and Michigan's passing game was so carefully managed that he never got to show off anything. He attempted like 15 or 20 passes per game, mostly in-breakers, from clean pockets, in positive game situations where he didn't have to press throws to play catchup. And he wasn't always amazing even inside that carefully managed environment. To be honest, when I see a gangly QB spraying heaters everywhere, it makes me think of Brock Osweiler. But McCarthy may be capable of a lot more than what Michigan let him show.

  • Bo Nix is billed as this really toolsy project quarterback, but I don't see the tools. He's pretty athletic moving in a short area, but his size, foot speed, and arm strength are all right around NFL average. His Oregon production won't translate at all... his passing stats were juiced by freebies throws behind the LOS, and most of his downfield throws were one-read slants and sideline shots. He has an XFL floor and a low end starter ceiling. I think he's a lot like Sam Howell.

Penix does have pin point accuracy for sure. The one thing I noticed is he caved in the title game when he got hit. That’s scary

Since 1975 16 USC QBs have been drafted into the NFL.Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart, Mark Sanchez, and Sam Darnold were 1st round picks. I do not believe a USC QB has ever been extraordinarily successful in the NFL.

I have seen Caleb Williams play about 10 times between last year and this year. I thought he looked better last year. This year I thought he was very inconsistent, and at times underwhelming. I admit I am not an expert or NFL level scout but I thought Caleb Williams showed some troublesome issues this year. His decision making at times looked very suspect, especially under pressure. His accuracy looked bad at times too. Of course NFL coaches can really help young players develop in a short amount of time. But before I draft Caleb Williams at #1, I would want to talk to him and hear how he talks about football. I would want to measure his football intelligence.

The history of USC QBs in the NFL has been been good. I would be very careful drafting Williams.

I thought Penix was the guy who could transition to the NFL faster than any of the others. You can see his accuracy, especially throwing the deep ball. What a weapon, if you have the receivers. Then I saw him play against Michigan and under pressure he looked like he was not the same QB. I still think in the right system with a decent OL, he could be an immediate success, but always keep in mind most college QB do not achieve success in the NFL.
