Ozzie Newsome says there have been no Jared Gaither trade talks
Posted by Mike Florio on April 14, 2010 8:12 AM ET
The Ravens tendered restricted free agent tackle Jared Gaither at the first-round level. Amid rumors in early March that the 49ers could be considering signing him to an offer sheet, we picked up indications that the Ravens would happily take the 13th overall selection in round one.

With neither the Niners nor anyone else making a play for Gaither, the Ravens reportedly are willing to move the big guy for only a second-round pick, which could be a little high in light of other recent trades. It's no surprise then that, to date, no team has made a play for him.

On Tuesday, Ravens G.M. Ozzie Newsome said that he has had no trade talks regarding the fifth-round pick in the 2007 supplemental draft.

"No, I have not had any dialogue with any ball clubs about Jared," Newsome said, according to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times. "When it comes to making trades of our players, then we put a value on what we think that player is worth. The same thing that Arizona did with Anquan [Boldin], they put a value on what they thought he was worth and we were the team that met that value. So, that is what we would do if it came to that."

In other words, Gaither is available.

Presumably, Michael Oher would move to left tackle if Gaither were dealt. The Ravens then would need to replace Oher on the . . . wait for perfunctory reference . . . non-blind side.

Newsome may value Gaither as a first-round level player, but they still only got him as a fifth-round pick in the 2007 supplemental draft.

This indicates three things to consider:

1. Firstly, other clubs had the chance in that supplemental draft to draft him earlier and they passed; players fall for a reason, so why did he? Was he simply miss-assesed or are there other hidden concerns, like character issues, work ethic, being coachable, injury or other pre-existing medical conditions?

2. Secondly, even if most teams miss-assessed him, explaining why he dropped, they still know if they offer more than a 5th round pick, his current team more than makes up the pick they spent to get him, so why would teams just so readily dish out a first rounder before the draft?

3. And lastly, the NFL draft has not happened yet and there are not that many teams out there that are in need of a starting LT. Teams that don't need one don't need Gaither, so the first round tender is too high for them to expend. And teams that desperately need a starting LT have a good shot to land their own in the draft's first or second round. So why part with a first rounder now, when you can wait until draft day to see what your options are?

That's why I believe there is no play for Gaither at the moment, but I would not be surprised to see a draft day deal, especially if a team with need of a starting LT is picking in the first round, intending to draft a T, and determine that Gaither is a better option than any available rookies to draft.

I would imagine most teams couldn't care less about that.

And reportedly, they're looking for a 2nd rounder.

The far more likely explanation is that teams just don't value him that highly, for whatever reason.

i think if anything happens w/ Gaither it's going to be during the draft.

wait until the 1st round goes by, see where all the tackles go, and who still needs a tackle. then you'll probably see teams determining whether any tackle they could get with their 2nd round pick would be better/worse than Gaither. then you might see someone jump on that.

although i found it interesting that the article mentioned a 2nd being a little high possibly considering recent trades....so who knows if that means a 3rd could potentially do it?

idk, i just think draft weekend will bring a Gaither deal with some team.
