Without belittling the defense too much, my one issue I feel we struggle with is actually tackling the QB and taking him down. There's so many times I've seen us come for the QB, and somehow he gets away. I've seen guys come on blitzes and trip over each other, guys running too far up the field and the QB steps up to run or pass.

I hope we work on this, I want to see all QBS who we come after go DOWN for loss of yardage. Please give your thoughts on this topic. I'M NOT BASHING THE D, just pointing out something I've seen us struggle with

Cowboys were tied for top 3 in actual sacks last year so wouldn't say taking down the QB has been a struggle. I will say our sack pace slowed down later in the season, likely because teams refocused on getting the ball out quicker.

Regardless your never always going to bring down the QB even when you get great pressure.

It’s a core skill to work on, I’m not sure the Cowboys have an issue in this specific area but you see edge guys around their 3rd year really start to get a lot more strip sacks and attack the ball more.

This is pretty common around the league, mainly because of the rules associated with trying to sack a qb.
Yeah you hit the quarterback to hard you get a penalty. Also I don’t remember the Cowboys missing to many sacks on the quarterback last season. I bet the poster is talking about preseason with guys who didn’t make the team.

Micah is like a coiled rattler, ready to strike. The talkative chap will create so much havoc that others, too, will increase their sack numbers.

We led league 2 years in a row in take aways, part of that is a direct result in pressuring the QB.

Often times pressure is just as good as a sack. Causes QN to make tougher throws, results in dropped passes and thrown away balls.

The defense changed a little later in the season because they were giving up too much rushing yardage. They stopped doing some DL games and some of the things that were getting to the QB earlier in the season. This helped shore up the run game at the expense of getting to the QB more often.

Also, once Anthony Brown went down (along with Jourdan Lewis), the side opposite Diggs was pretty consistently open. That allowed QB’s to locate an open receiver and get rid of the ball more quickly than in the first month or so of the season. Bland ended up replacing Lewis effectively, but nobody could stop the bleeding at left CB. They just didn’t have the personnel to do much about it. Even before Brown got hurt, that side could have used better coverage though.

Finally, as you mentioned, offenses started scheming to get rid of the ball more quickly. Offensive coordinators were calling few long developing pass plays by the end of the season.

Those 3 things took Dallas from leading the league in sacks down to third place. Still respectable but not at the torrid pace they started the season at.

What did the team do to help those things? They drafted Mazi and re-signed big Hankins to hold down the middle of the field, allowing the ends and LB’s to focus more on keeping the run from getting to the edges (which was a big problem last season). With disciplined play, the run should not be an issue, but they have to go out and do it.

They also brought in Stephon Gilmore to play the other side opposite Diggs. This was huge and should pay huge dividends in the pass rush. I cannot adequately tell you how important that move was. It is going to be a real problem for offenses who will have to hold on to the ball longer or throw into coverage where there is a ball hawk at every secondary spot. That should help the pass rush immensely.

Gilmore, Diggs, Bland and Lewis all can get INT’s given the opportunity. The Dallas pass rush absolutely has the horses to give the secondary plenty of opportunity.

Shut the run down and the rest will fall into place. That’s where it all will start.

Yeah, I feel like opposition defensive coordinators adjusted and found away to slow our edge guys using the run game and misdirection.

If we struggle to get Aaron Rodgers on the ground in week two he’ll shred us.

We all wanted to see more mobile QBs in the league, and now we have 'em. QB hit rules don't help of course.

I’ll take Micah Parsons and our home opener crowd against Mekhi Becton/Billy Turner/Whoever the hell they want to throw out there.

Rodgers won’t make it out of week 2.

I wouldn’t get too overconfident. Most on this board thought we were going to do a number on Rodgers last year in Green Bay…Oops! Rodgers feels at home at AT&T Stadium. He won his only Super Bowl there. He pulled the rug right out from under us in a playoff game in 2016 at AT&T. Better wait until we see how we look in the opener against the Giants. We haven’t seen our starters on the field since last season.

We’ll see how ‘at home’ he feels week 2. When Gilmore and Diggs are clamping his wideouts and 11 is in his lap every drop back.

You are partly right....i agree he is a loser and lazy. But at least he is just on offense, and not part of the defense. Good observation though. Be kind and not too harsh on the guy, he is in the best shape of his life you know.

Nobody has been able to answer this but.... how can a quarterback be a loser with a pretty good career winning percentage and in the top 10 of quarterbacks most of his career???

That's a loser?

Most 220 pound QBs are faster and quicker than 270 pound linemen.
