Not really surprising, how long did people really believe the school would allow her to continue coaching with early-onset dementia?
IMO, it was only a matter of time before she was forced out anyway. This way it saves a whole lot of people a lot of trouble, including herself. She gets to go out gracefully on her own terms.
It is kinda sad though. I have absolutely no love or respect for women's basketball, but she was still a fantastic coach and motivator who I've always been convinced could have succeeded as a men's coach as commanding as she is. I pray that she has the luxury of checking out before the full effects of her illness hit, because as someone who watched his grandmother suffer through Alzheimers and slowly die it is as horrific as anything you can ever witness.
