I don't know if this has been considered, but since the emergence of the Saints, I feel it should be discussed. Did we ever determine if it was confirmed that Sean Payton was the coach since Romo first got here that felt Romo was going to play well? I remember reports that stated he wanted Romo out there more than Carter, Testaverde or even Henson. Did anyone ever find an article, or was this rumor?

I think with the prowess shown by Payton thus far, his opinion in the matter might be pretty important.

I mentioned this about a week ago.

Both Payton and Romo played QB at the same school, so it could be just "school spirit", but I highly doubt it.

I think Payton really liked Romo's potential.

But who knows if that rumor about trading Romo was true?

Yep, Brian Estridge, a guy on 103.3, got to be friends with Payton while he was here, and he was saying even this year that Payton still liked Romo a lot and had tried to trade for him. (BTW, he also said Sean had zero interest in Henson. This while Henson was still in the league.)

But I agree -- the fact that a bright offensive mind such as Payton likes Romo so much gives me hope that maybe he can be a good quarterback in the league.

IIRC, these reports were even here before Payton left and tried to trade for him. I seem to remember hearing that Payton thought they found something in Romo as early as his 1st or second year.

I don't remember it being specified as Payton, just that "some coaches" wanted him to start over Carter. Wouldn't surprise me though, Payton signed what I consider a similar type QB in Brees. (*obigatory Romo does not equal Brees yet disclaimer*).

I remember Peyton inquiring about ROMO in a trade....but, BP would not entertain the idea

Payton was the one that made Kerry Collins play respectable football while he was in New York, obviously he has given Drew Brees the opportunity to continue to be successful despit his nameless o-line and unheralded receving corp, not to mention the lack of a tightend. Payton appears to be a solid offensive mind, that Saints defense has played puzzlingly well, there is not much talent on it.

I remember this as well

Payton wanted Brees so he pretended to be interested in Romo. This was to keep Dallas from going after Brees. :D

I think you're talking about David Lee, he really had a hard-on for Romo, said if Bledsoe should go down, ROmo could play, and play well, last year I believe

Im glad we got his extention for next year already, after the NFL sees him we might not have been able to get him signed.

Yeah I for a fact know it was Payton who was really impressed with Romo, and he should know, after he was the QB coach!
