It will materialize. Drone taxis, hoverboards, jet packs, airbikes are coming soon.

As a fan of the movie rocketeer growing up, I like this stuff

I'd think the biggest issue with multiple personal aircraft commuting to work each morning would be traffic control in the sky. I think it would be impractical to have traffic lanes in the sky. It seems like that would create congestion up there too, so that leaves out really tall traffic lights.

Solutions?

The control in "traffic control" is not in the commuters hands. AI powered aircraft

I don't like it or want it that way, but that is how i see it going. We have started seeing driverless cars, i would think it would be easier in the skys.

If the tech ever actually emerges, it'll take much longer for the FAA to allow citizens in the air.

For what the OP posted, personal uses of it would. Maybe stuff like track racing or sporting type events might happen sooner. . It would be cool if this stuff is the new gocart racing tracks

If it is commercialized or for transports, maybe it could happen faster. I could see it extending the bus/subway transport system. You go to point A terminal, take your flying transport into another terminal and pickup your bus or subway train As long as it avoids airport space, and incoming plane traffic. Maybe they just designate runway type lanes into cities for planes coming in and out, and this type of tech is not allowed in those.

Flying drone taxis are being tested all over the world.

There has not been an uproar about tesla crashes and deaths, whether is it due to the tech or negligence. There might not be uproar over aircraft crashes or deaths, if its function and fun is noticeable.

I think it will be a very long time before anything like this is allowed to fly over densely populated areas, and there would most likely be an altitude limit. I can see it being permitted in finite or even enclosed spaces, for things such as your gocart racing idea. Even public drone usage is limited, if I'm not mistaken.

Maybe so.

It might start in places like neom if they get that going or one of the other new smart type cities of the future. Where they can design the city around that type of travel. Then once they have the safety part down, bring it to normal cities.
