FMIA: Snyder’s Long Goodbye, and the First-Round Case for Bijan Robinson

T-minus 10 days to round one of the draft, and the NFL world is hopping.

Four big names in the first round I heard a lot about in recent days. I cast a wide net. I listen. I pry with people I’ve known for a while.

Bryce Young is (no pun intended) head-and-shoulders in the lead to be the first pick in the draft.

Tyree Wilson, the Texas Tech pass-rusher, might be in competition with Alabama’s Will Anderson for the top defensive prospect on Houston’s draft board, and that could mean something if the Texans aren’t quite as smitten with C.J. Stroud as Mock Draft World thinks.

Jalen Carter has two visits to top-10 teams left before Wednesday’s deadline for players to make pre-draft visits to teams. That’s what agent Drew Rosenhaus told me Saturday. I’ll tell you the team that is the most perfect fit for Carter in the NFL: the Pittsburgh Steelers, who’d have to trade up from 17 to get him.

  • Peter Skoronski’s an interesting case. The Northwestern tackle has the dreaded short-arm plague, and two teams in the top 10 see him now as a guard. So what? Guard Chris Lindstrom got drafted 14th by the Falcons in 2019, and he’s now a cornerstone player in Atlanta. Ditto Zack Martin (16th) in Dallas, and with a slightly smaller exclamation point, Quenton Nelson (sixth) in Indy. All got second contracts. If Skoronski’s a great guard, getting picked ninth or 12th or 15th is absolutely fine.
  • This is not an overriding negative on Jaxon Smith-Njigba, an excellent receiver prospect. But the Ohio State football season was five months long last year, including practice, and Smith-Njigba got a left hamstring injury early, and he played 60 snaps total in three games, and never got on the field in the last 10 weeks. He runs a 4.48 40-. I’m not the only one wondering: How is Jaxon Smith-Njigba the top-rated receiver on so many boards with 10 days to go?

Jaxon Smith-Njigba had a left hamstring injury last year. He had a gigantic 2021 season at Ohio State, then played only 60 snaps in 2022, and I’m hearing some reticence about taking a guy 12th or 18th in the first round when, in a 4.5-month season, he managed to play the equivalent of one football game with a hamstring injury.

One quick note........is just me or has anyone else noticed we have not heard one positive word about Jalen Carter the person. Usually, we hear he's a good kid or not a bad kid, but unless I'm missing something, none of that, not even Kirby Smart.........interesting

“The goal has been to educate teams about Jalen and the case and who he is,” Rosenhaus said. “It hasn’t been an easy process, but I do think it’s been good for Jalen to get out and see the teams. I think there’s a very good chance he’ll go in the top five.”

If Houston doesn't take a QB there will be riots in Houston. lol
J Carter is a very good player but his attitude toward this process and his accident are alarming, to say the least. Not wanting to visit a team outside of the top ten seems childish what if a team wanted to trade up to get him?
This year's draft is going to be fun. The Cowboys are sitting pretty darn good after a better-than-normal off-season.
Get ya Popcorn ready!!! :)

Sounds like Houston regrets not tanking that last game. Supposedly they really like Young. Then again I was upset the Cowboys didn’t tank in 2020 but we ended up with Parsons and a extra 3rd.

Huge error by Texans. not only losing #1 but what they could have got trading it to Panthers

I don't know what to think of him, glad we don't have to make that decision. We have seen great players ruin their careers with their off the field antics.

Didn't something come out in the last few days about him not wanting to practice at GA? Sounded like they had to baby sit him. Don't take that as gospel as I have been pretty busy but that was the gist of what i thought I read somewhere.

This is code for his agent didn't want more word to leak out about his attitude. Limit the number of people meeting him.

I would stay far away from this kid.

He’s not, he’s a lazy liar from everything being said. Can’t trust him. See how easy it was for him to lie to cops? Didn’t even hesitate. Big red flag for teams

Think about it ........this kid is w/o a doubt top talent, maybe even best, in the draft but with Drew working as hard as he can to keep him from falling out of the top ten, what does that tell you?

The real question teams have to ask, especially the top 10, is what you think this kid will be like once he gets a 2nd contract $20-25M?

I would be very leery of him if I were in a position to draft him. Stinks because on film he's ridiculous.

oh well, not our problem.

What if Houston takes Will Anderson at #2, especially if they think C.J. Stoud isn't the answer, and since they have #12 and then #33 not to mention the picks from Cleveland in 2024, they could easily move up for say Anthony Richardson from Florida to get him or better yet move down and take Hooker at say #17 and wait on the rehab. Many of the so called experts had Hooker as the second best QB behind Young in the draft before his injury.

If Houston, and it is a big IF, does not take a QB at #2 especially if Young is gone at #1, then this whole draft is going to go topsy curvy starting with #3.

I can see them taking the best defensive player and targeting Hooker late 1st or early 2nd.

If Will Anderson turns into Myles Garrett or Von Miller, he's worth $30M a year.

If CJ Stroud turns into Derek Carr or Daniel Jones, he's worth $40M a year.

Anderson is an awesome prospect, but he could play like a Hall of Famer and it still wouldn't justify picking him over a QB. I'm a fan sitting on his butt eating jerky sticks, and I can do that math. You can bet the Texans FO can too.

If I were Houston, I'd also draft the best player at pick number 2 in Anderson.

This QB class is not it, and the harm of drafting the wrong guy at 2 is much worse than picking a surefire star at one of the NFLs most important positions
