Daniel Snyder says he can now "sleep at night"
Posted by Mike Florio on June 21, 2010 3:51 PM ET
After more than a decade of owning the Commanders, Daniel Snyder seems to be finally figuring out the wisdom of stepping aside and letting the professionals do their job.

And he knows it.

Snyder recently told Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com that the owner of the Commanders can now "sleep at night," after hiring Mike Shanahan to coach the team and Bruce Allen to serve as its General Manager.

"They know what they want and are working hard to go get it," Snyder said. "I'm just enjoying myself. It's been a lot of fun for me. It's been effortless on my part. With Bruce and Mike, you have this coach and front office camaraderie that's really special. To see it is really wonderful for me."

Snyder feels that way even though the crown jewel of the 2009 free agency class has decided that he wants out. Snyder called defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth's absence "disappointing," but he has said nothing about what the team will do with the man who wants no part of the team's new 3-4 defense.

And that's good. Impulse control and/or a tendency to collect sycophants likely has hampered Snyder in the past. He now seems to be willing not only to stand back, but also to stay there.

Whether it continues if/when the losses pile up remains to be seen. But maybe the losses won't pile up -- and maybe the Commanders finally are on the right track.

No doubt Danny is learning from his mistakes.

But this Washington team still has too many holes to make any real noise this year or next.

Hey Dan, way to (once again) take a big dump on Joe Gibbs' legacy.

What a freaking insult. And I bet the sheep Redsk*n fans are eating this crap up.

We'll see how this goes if they don't have success soon. It's one thing to say 'oh, I'll let the professionals do their job', but it's another to say that after a few disappointing years and then figuring that if you're going to fail, you might as well run the show yourself.

Most Commanders fans are saavy enough to know the big difference between Gibbs 1.0 and 2.0

1.0 was one of the most successful eras in NFL history.

2.0 helped bring a franchise back to respectability, but came up well short. In part to the fact that Joe Gibbs the GM was not up to the task, and his "help" was Snyderatto.

Which is really what happened during Gibbs 2.0. Snyder didn't come in and take back the team after the 6-10 and 5-11 years. Gibbs was still coach and retired on his own accord again.

Really, the one time the past decade that Snyder "came back" into the fold was after the Marty year, which in hindsight set the team back a decade.

Spurrier quit. Gibbs stayed 4 years and provided stability and some respectability before retiring again. Zorn and Cerrato together were complete jokes.

Along with that, a 35 year old Snyder coming off a 2 billion dollar sale of his business is going to be different from a 46 year old Snyder who has taken a decade of being beaten, both in football, and in business off the field. The only other person who may have had a worse decade, after entering it on such highs was George W. Bush.

The proof will be in the pudding. Even Jerruh figured out he'd royally ****ed up and brought in Parcells

The assumption of course is that Allen/Shanahan are going to fail

That is much more wishful thinking around these parts :)
