Sean Payton joins Fox for 2022
Posted by Mike Florio on May 16, 2022, 11:49 AM EDT

Sean Payton won’t be coaching in 2022, but he will be working in football.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Payton has accepted a job with Fox.

Payton could end up like Cowher and Dungy. Already has a ring, and realizes getting paid millions to talk about football part-time is a pretty good gig.

Being a head coach is a full-time investment. Not everyone want to do it into their 70s. Dungy and Cowher never came back.

That’s why I laugh when people say to bring back Jimmy.

He works a few hours a week. Spends the rest of the week fishing, drinking beer, spending time with his family and just enjoying life. No reason to ever go back to the grind

Saints have his rights until 2024. So, anyone who wants him to coach next year has to compensate New Orleans.

I don't think Payton has any aspirations to coach Dallas or he would not have signed that 5 year extension in 2019.

I believe that’s voided once he sits a season

He's not going back to New Orleans, the mayor has destroyed that city.

If they don't look into he and Williams emails he might get a job.

They may not ask for anything.......he left on very good terms with Mickey and the owner. I'm guessing they would not stand in his way of a job he really wants.
Agree 100%.

Once a full season passes, they won't get much, if anything at all.

Definitely won't be even one 1st let alone multiple.

They aren't going to prevent him from returning to the league. It's just a bad look. And what would be their recourse? Bring back Payton themselves?

It's not gonna happen.

Much more likely Payton enjoys broadcasting than the Saints compensation being a problem.

Didn’t hear anything about Sean Payton almost being the Dolphins head coach. If he’s only going to work part time for Fox during Jimmy’s off weeks then it looks as if this will be a one year gig and he’ll be back coaching next year.

Parcels got his stadium built. Jimmy got him going and Superbowls. Steven would have to really like Sean to bring him in. My guess is Quinn takes over if there is a change.

Next year should be interesting, especially if the boys dont have a good record and or miss the playoffs.
The Sean rumors will be hot and heavy!!!

He left them without a QB and just walked out.

Let's say he wants to return to coaching, what was wrong with NO? It looks like he didn't want to clean up that mess he left and he didn't just walk out on coaching, he walked out on NO and the team.

"Very good terms" doesn't mean anyone gets him without giving up picks because they have fans to consider. And I can attest to it, Saints fans hate Dallas, if they were the team.

It's why I said they "may not" ask for anything. Even if they do, I don't it would be compensation significant enough to stand in the way of a particular team he wants to coach.

FOX needs to put him and his play-by-play broadcast partner on two Saints games; one early in the season- 1st 6 games- and and one game week 13 or later.
