Report: Favre tells Vikings he's not returning

Posted by Mike Florio on August 3, 2010 10:37 AM ET
Many of you scoffed at our report of uneasiness in Mankato regarding the Brett Favre situation.

Scoff no more.

Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Favre began telling team officials on Monday night that he will not return for another season. The disclosure comes on the heels of an observation from Zulgad that team "ownership and power brokers" held a meeting at practice that "looked very intense."

Zulgad also reports that Favre plans to issue a press release later today. Apparently, Favre's injured ankle "has not responded" after surgery and rehab.

Jay Glazer of FOX also reports that Favre has begun communicating the message to teammates.

We've been insisting that, before Favre returns, he needs to persuade everyone that he won't return. Just like he did last year.

----------------------------------------------------

Was anyone really surprised by this?

If true, this must have come out of nowhere and really blindsided the Vikes. Jay Glazer was just on Colin Cowherd yesterday laughing at the notion that Favre wasn't coming back and calling it ridiculous.

Is it for real this time, or another way to push the drama?

Good news for every other team in the NFC, the were the best team in the NFC last year and it was a shame they shot themselves in the foot in the championship game.

You never know with Farv but it's not just on PFT all the news outlets are flashing breaking news now!

Wonder if the Vikes have Daunte Culpepper's name on speed dial? I bet they are hopping the Skins do not sign McNabb so they will have a shot at him next season.

I lost any respect I had for Favre the last time he pulled this joke(?). If it's true he isn't going to play this season, but didn't alert them until yesterday (or maybe last Monday?); he doesn't deserve any respect from anybody else.

BTW: I remember when Barry Sanders (out of the blue) told the Lions 1-3 days before TC was to start that he didn't want to play football anymore. I couldn't believe that a player would make that kind of decision just days before TC was to begin. Didn't matter what he thought of the Lions coaching staff/ownership, how could he let his team down so badly.

I believe it when week 1 rolls around and he's not on the field.

mark my words, this is just part of the drama
he wants the headlines, he wants the adulation, he wants all the hand wringing, he wants the vikings to beg him

he will be there for the first game
we will beat the crap out of him

I wont believe it until he's not there on the final gun of the last game of the year. ha

October may roll around and his ankle has responded.

If its real, I'd say the NFC is wide open this year.
A little bit more especially in the NFC North but the core elite teams are still there minus the Vikings.

When you say "they" you really mean "Favre" right? He's the one who cost them the game with that horrible pass he got intercepted at the end there. He choked. Typical Favre. Makes some horrible decisions sometimes.

From what I say he's texting people, "This is it."

Besides the obvious fact that the text is typical cryptic Favre bull****, it suggests to me he means this is his last year, not that he's necessarily retiring.

And I think that's exactly what he wanted. "This is it", doesn't resolve a damn thing.
