Shanahan: If Haynesworth won't cooperate, we'll go on without him
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 25, 2010 4:31 PM ET
Commanders coach Mike Shanahan said last week that he expects defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to do whatever the Commanders' coaching staff tells him to do, whether that means playing nose tackle, defensive end or free safety.

But what if Haynesworth is uncooperative with the coaches when training camp opens?

In an interview that aired Sunday on ESPNews, Ed Werder asked Shanahan if he's optimistic that Haynesworth will be cooperative with playing in the 3-4 scheme that the Commanders are installing.

"We'll find out," Shanahan answered. "We know how talented he is, we know what he's done in the past, and I'm looking from the positive side that he comes in and does what he's supposed to do. If not, we'll go ahead without him."

Shanahan has stated emphatically that Haynesworth will not be traded. But Shanahan's comments to Werder suggest that the Commanders don't think Haynesworth is a player they need to keep, especially if he's not interested in doing what Shanahan and the staff tell him to do.

Please go without him.. :)

I actually don't think he's that much of a threat if he does play. The only time Haynesworth has been dominant and a force is when he was playing for a contract.

This is actually a very interesting thought

For all intents and purposes Haynesworth is playing for another contract

Bruce Allen negotiated an option with him and D-Hall in March, where if they pay back a significant part of their signing bonuses, they are free to be UFA's.

In Haynesworth's case, he is also playing to create a market acceptable to the Commanders for a trade. If he plays well, a team like Minny may bite on Washington's price for Haynesworth.

I have no idea what will happen or how this will play out. However, Albert opens up quite a few doors for himself if he plays to the level of his talent.
