Here is my best guess.

Specialists (5)
  • P (1) - Bryan Anger
  • PK (1) - Brandon Aubrey
  • LS (1) - Trent Sieg
  • PR/KR (1) - Ka Vontae Turpin
  • Gunner (1) - C.J. Goodwin**
Offense (20)
  • QB (2) - Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush
  • RB (3) - Tony Pollard, Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn
  • TE (3) - Jake Ferguson, Luke Schoonmaker, Peyton Hendershot
  • WR (4) - CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, Michael Gallup, Jalen Tolbert
  • OT (3) - Tyron Smith, Terence Steele, Chuma Edoga
  • OG (3) - Tyler Smith, Zack Martin, T.J. Bass
  • OC (2) - Tyler Biadasz, Brock Hoffman**
Defense (21)
  • DE (5) - Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Dorance Armstrong, Sam Williams, Dante Fowler, Jr.
  • DT (4) - Johnathan Hankins, Osa Odighizuwa, Mazi Smith, Neville Gallimore
  • LB (4) - Leighton Vander Esch, Damone Clark, Devin Harper, Markquese Bell
  • CB (4) - Trevon Diggs, Stephon Gilmore, DaRon Bland, Eric Scott Jr.
  • S (4) - Jayron Kearse, Malik Hooker, Israel Mukuamu, Juanyeh Thomas
** Activated from Practice Squad

Inactive (9) - QB Trey Lance, RB Hunter Luepke, WR Jalen Brooks, OT Asim Richards, DT Viliami Fehoko, DT Chauncey Golston, CB Jourdan Lewis, CB Noah Igbinoghene, S Donovan Wilson

  • Izzy backs up Bland in the slot until Lewis is well enough to activate to the 53-man squad. After that, Izzy probably sits a lot, or takes the place of Thomas behind Hooker.
  • Rookie Eric Scott, Jr will be the back-up for Diggs and Gilmore on the outside. We'll see what the Cowboys have in Igbinoghene later. He could replace Scott at some point because of his NFL experience.
  • Bell is a backup LB, but he will also backup Kearse if Kearse gets hurt. Thomas backs up Hooker.
  • I have the Cowboys temporarily promoting Brock Hoffman from the PS because Sean Harlow doesn't know the offense yet. But that could change quickly as Harlow gets up to speed.
  • I picked Bass over Richards to be the backup guard because Richards has been spending more time at OT.
  • Chuma Edoga gets the nod over Richards, if Chuma is healthy, due to NFL Experience.
  • Luepke gets to sit because he's the 4th RB on the team, and the Cowboys will use Rico Dowdle as their big back in goal line situations.
  • Brooks and Fehoko need to gain experience in practice before they see the field.
  • New players to the team Lance and Igbinoghene sit and learn.
  • Harper is on the active roster because of his special teams contributions.
  • Gallimore gets the nod over Golston because he's been listed ahead of Golston all summer on the depth chart at 3T. The hope is that now that Gallimore is not being asked to play out of position at 1T, he'll be an improved player behind Odighizuwa
  • Lewis and Wilson are out due to injuries, but both will be back on the Game-day active roster when they are healthy.

I cant see Eric Scott being active … he still has a long way to go, Mukamu may be 4th corner in a pinch

What's the rationale for only letting 46 dress for games in the first place. That's never really made sense to me to allow a 53 man roster but only 46 can be active.

Same here. Dumb rule.

You get to have 48 active (plus a QB can be inactive but considered the emergency QB).

My guess is the following 7:

Trey Lance
Hunter Luepke
Jalen Brooks
TJ Bass
Villiam Fehoko Jr.
Noah Igbinoghene
Jourdan Lewis

With Brock Hoffman and C.J. Goodwin elevated from the practice squad to take spots 47 and 48. Similar to OP's list except I went with Richards over Bass because of G/T position flex (Bass not there on C position flex yet). Also assuming Wilson will be healthy enough to play and Gholston will be the last man on defensive line, which allows OP to get to 48 instead of 46.

Maybe no game day check for those left off. Don't know

This actually made it make sense to me. https://steelersdepot.com/2018/08/c...game-day-rule-roster-construction-principles/
Website won't let me copy the key text but essentially the idea is to limit competitive advantage from injuries, so if we have 2 injuries and the other team has 7 injuries then we would come into the game with more players to rotate and therefore have an advantage. So by limiting everybody to 46 players on game day it mitigates that.
