I am interested to see who you would pick for an all time Cowboys coaching staff. I am talking about the head coach to offensive line coach, defensive line coach, secondary, defensive assistants, special teams, etc. They can be from any time period in our history.

What do you have?

Oh Lord, I'd have to research that, I remember some of the assistants from the 1960's but not all.

Sorry, I have no desire to do that. Other than Landry for head coach....

Head Coach--Tom Landry (all other opinions are wrong)

Offense
Coordinator--Norv Turner
Offensive Line--Jim Myers
WR--Ray Renfro (feel free to disagree)
Backs--Dan Reeves
TEs---Mike Ditka
QBs--Sean Payton (close call between him and Norv Turner)

Defense

Coordinator--Ernie Stautner
Line--Ernie Stautner
Backs--Gene Stallings (ask me tomorrow and I might say Dick Noland)
LB--Jerry Tubbs (if you disagree, you know little of Cowboys history)

Special Teams--Joe Avezzano (with a special shout out to Mike Ditka for all the screaming on the sidelines)
Kicker--Ben Agajanian (and second place isn't close IMO)
Strength and Conditioning--Bob Ward

And particular mention goes to one of the key figures in the early history of America's Team

Special Assistant--Ermal Allen (alienated the players as a RB coach, but Landry used his brilliant football mind to scout and analyze other teams, among other things. I loved his segments on the old Tom Landry Show.)

Very difficult due to the fact that Tom Landry designed both the Motion Offense and Flex Defense. Coach Landry also is the only NFL Head Coach I've ever heard of that structured the Offensive and Defensive game plans each week. Plus he called the plays for both sides of the ball on game day.

So, I will say that Head Coach, Offensive and Defensive Coordinators are all Tom Landry. Offensive Line Coach would be Tony Wise, Honorable Mention to Bill Calahan. Defensive Line Coach would be Butch Davis. Special Teams Coordinator would be Joe Avezzano. The TE coach would be our current coach Lunda Wells along with our current Passing Coordinator/ DB combination of Joe Whitt and Al Harris. I would also take Brit Brown and his staff for getting the players ready to return from injury.

Our most notable assistant coaches were Dan Reeves, Mike Ditka, Gene Stallings, Dave Wannstedt, Norve Turner, Butch Davis, Dave Campo, Sean Payton, Todd Bowles, Bill Calahan and Todd Haley.

I apologize for anyone I have slighted because, we have been blessed with many great coaches.

Wanted to put Big Mac somewhere, but would rather have everyone above, maybe he can replace carrot top at quarterbacks coach.

Loved Tom, but I'll take Jimmy and his whole 92/93 staff. If it aint broke.
Hard to argue that. Landry was legendary but the Jimmy staff was so strong across the board.

I love and respect Coach Landry and he was great for the long haul.
But if I had to pick a HC for say a 5 year period, it's Jimmy Johnson.

Well obviously, it all begins & ends with Garrett. It is hard to put into words or quantify his contributions to the organization and evolution of the game.

Much like Obi Wan, he transcended our existence. Hard to talk about him without crying.

If talking about just a short span of a few seasons, Jimmy and many on his staff would have to be a priority.

But if talking about All Time - coaches that proved success over a long time, here is what I would say ...

TOM LANDRY: 20 consecutive winning seasons, 2 Super Bowl wins, appearances in 5 Super Bowls & 1 NFL Championship game (pre-SB). True innovator on both offense & defense. Created the 4-3 defense & the Flex defense
MIKE DITKA: TE Coach - really take your pick on what role to put him in. He was a highly regarded assistant, and his success as head coach after being an assistant in Dallas speaks to his coaching ability
DAN REEVES: Asst. HC - like Ditka, take your pick on what role to put him in. He was a highly regarded assistant, and his success as head coach after being an assistant in Dallas speaks to his coaching ability
NORV TURNER: Offensive Coordinator & QB Coach
ERNIE STAUTNER: Defensive Coordinator (Landry would also play a big role with the defense)
HUDSON HOUK: O-Line Coach
HUBBARD ALEXANDER: WR Coach
BUTCH DAVIS: D-Line Coach (Landry & Stautner would also play a role)
DAVE CAMPO: Defensive Backs Coach
JOE AVEZZANO: ST Coach
