Pink Floyd... with or without Waters?

For me it's with Waters, and its not even close. Gilmore did an admirable job, but its just not the same to me.

*side note to the JFK thread: on one of the fence panels on the grassy knoll, someone wrote a line from the above song.... "Mother Should I Trust the Government?" :)

Dark Side of the Moon is my favorite Floyd album, but The Wall has some great moments.

No question with Waters. These guys were way ahead of their time. I'll never forget their concert at Texas Stadium.

It is funny how bands keep the same name even though they are vastly different when some of the members move on either through choice or by death.

With, no doubt.

It's really eerie listening to the stuff that came out previous to Atom Heart Mother, how much they sounded like the Beatles.

Have a look at the current Guns N Roses lineup. It's scarey. Here's hoping someday Axl will reunite with the original lineup.

With Waters, definitely. I don't care at all for their early, early stuff, but everything from Dark Side to Final Cut (my personal favorite Floyd album) were classics.

I like Gilmour's voice better, but Waters definitely had his strengths.

Momentary Lapse was awesome, but it's just not Pink Floyd to me. Same with Division Bell.

I loved Atom Heart, Animals, et al up to and including Momentary. Division Bell didn't do much for me at all.

Waters was soooo close to pulling off a good/great album with Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking, but after the first few tracks it just fell apart in every conceivable fashion.

FWIW, Radio KAOS was the first compact disc I ever bought. Not a bad album, not a great one.

Heh. Delicate Sound of Thunder was the first CD I ever bought. Funny how that sticks with you.

Anyway, I've tried and tried to warm up to what they did prior to Dark Side, but I just can't and I suppose that's why Syd Barrett just doesn't mean a whole lot to me beyond being the band's muse for awhile after he cracked. It's a shame because I know a lot of that early stuff is very highly regarded, but most of it is nigh unlistenable to me. :(

Now that I've thought about it, I bought Rush Chronicles and Radio KAOS the same day.

Love the Floyd. Saw them in a massive open air concert (> 100,000 there) outside Mannheim, West Germany back in ohhhh, 83? 84? Somewhere around there. Awesome!

Dark Side of the Moon easily is one of the most significant albums ever recorded. How long did it stay in the Billboard Top 100? Over 10 years straight?

(ever watch Wizard of Oz set to this album? Mind bending!)

I bought Back in Black the day after and those were the only two CDs (well 3 if you count DSoT being a double album) I owned for MONTHS since they were too expensive. Still, I burned out the spindle motor of my first CD player (big giant thing about the size of a VCR hooked into a boombox...hey, I was a broke teenager) listening to them.

Radio KAOS was a decent album. I remember I was firmly in the Gilmour camp back when it was released so I was predisposed to hating it...but it grew on me. Strangely, I like that more than I like a lot of Gilmour's solo stuff now.

15 years! Incredible. DSotM gets visited pretty regularly on my iPod. I definitely can't say that for any other 40 year old (!!!!!!) album.
