I am more than a little bit confused on the plan for MM to be calling plays, yet we will be hiring a OC. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the OC 99.9% of the time call the plays? Why the need for both? Have the Cowboys made it 100% official that MM will be calling plays, or is this still rumor? MM has already made it clear that he wants no part in calling plays...if he is forced, we will find out real quick just how much he wants to be the HC beyond this or next year....because the guy is lazy, and will now need to learn the offense's terminology and assume more responsibility. Maybe somebody smarter than me can clear some of this situation up for me....I am MM's age and lazy too. :muttley:

If MM wants to call plays, the OC will be title only for someone, but will be in charge of putting the game plan together. So he needs to be a young innovative coach.
Then will get his chance to call plays at some point.

I know you said MM said he doesn't want to call plays. I don't think it is lazy, just he wants to focus on everything.
We really need a fresh approach to the entire offense, and allow him to call the plays, with the possibility of MM helping out at first.

I think we are overblowing this whole MM wont learn the offensive terminology narrative, and the idea that he doesnt want to call plays. Of course, he knows the terminology. I have to believe some of these quotes were so it was obvious that he wasnt holding Kellen Moore back and holding his hand the whole way.

It seems like a certainty that MM will be calling plays. Most likely scenario is that the OC will be a glorified assistant coach that specializes in one area which is why I think a Brian Schottenheimer type is the obvious choice. Mixed results as a coordinator, but has a reputation of being an excellent run game guy. Give him a title, some extra cash, and let him do a lot of the grunt work during the week so MM can be the hero or zero on game day.

Andy Reid, Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Matt Lafleur, Doug Peterson, Nick Sirianni, Mike McDaniel, Josh McDaniels, Zac Taylor, Kevin Stephanski are all head coaches who also call plays.
They also have offensive coordinators.
Yeah I thought this was common sense. You still need a OC in title.

Brian Broaddus who has worked for the Cowboys...and is well plugged in...was told by more than one person within the Packers organization that he had very lazy habits. He admitted that he never watched every 2019 Cowboy snap...a bullet point that helped him get the HC job....BTW, Chuckles laughed that off, but Booger displayed a very uncomfortable grin. I honestly believe that Booger has NEVER forgotten that fact, and it's still a sore point with him. And what HC do you know....who has formerly called Offensive plays....did not bother to learn the teams Offensive terminology after 2+ years on the job? That admission alone, is a fireable offense to me given he was supposed to be assisting and/or mentoring Moore during his time here.

The offensive coordinator does more than just call plays. That is just what we the fans see so we assume that's only what they do.

For example, the OC also helps to design the playbook, plan and oversee the offseason, training camp and in-season offensive practices, manages all of the offensive position coaches, etc.

I have no problem with a head coach calling offensive plays or defensive alignments if they are good at it because it's always a lot more involved than that.

McCarthy will likely designate a coach, probably Quinn, as "Assistant Head Coach" unless he sticks with someone he already has, that will help him more with head coaching responsibilities so he can devote time to being more involved with the offense.

Will it work? Who knows, but either way it will settle the "How good is McCarthy?" question for the 2024 season.

If the Cowboys perform worse than they did with Moore, then the Cowboys can move on from McCarthy to a new coach and unlike McCarthy, the new coach won't be locked in to any pre-existing coaches.

Since we knew McCarthy was not going anywhere after back-to-back 12-win seasons and the Cowboys first road playoff win in 30 years, I like the fact that all possible excuses have been removed from the McCarthy equation.

Whether good or bad, next season will be all on McCarthy. Either way the Cowboys and Cowboys fans will have their answer.

MM should have been fired when he said he was going to fix the penalty issue in the off-season.

Should have promoted Dan Quinn last season to be honest.
