Portis says he'll 'probably' return in Week 2

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Commanders running back Clinton Portis is targeting Washington's second game for his return from a shoulder injury.

He essentially ruled himself out for the Monday night opener against the Minnesota Vikings. He wore a helmet and his No. 26 jersey during the entire practice Friday for the first time since partially dislocating his left shoulder four weeks ago, but said he was focusing on the upcoming games against Dallas and Houston.

"The way things look, bro, you'll probably be seeing 2-6 against Dallas," Portis said. "But who knows? If not, I should be ready for Houston. They want me to be 100 percent."

Portis said he has had no full contact on his shoulder, which he hurt making a tackle in the preseason opener against Cincinnati.

"I tried to show coach that I still had it, but I don't think he fell for it," said Portis, who rushed for a franchise-record 1,516 yards last season. "I tried to hit the bag, but it was wet, so it didn't make me look too good."

Portis, who rushed for a franchise-record 1,516 yards last season, has started 31 of 32 games since joining the Commanders in 2004. Ladell Betts, who started the game Portis missed, is expected to start Monday.

I don't see him ready for our game either. He's already mentioning Houston as his likely return. While it was reported that he had practiced 'in pads', the reality is he wasn't participating in any contact, which is basically the true nuts and bolts test for this type of injury. They will have a short work week and he hasn't played contact football in over a month.

If Roy even comes close to horse collaring Portis, Skins fans will start another holocaust.

That might be a bad idea against one of the largest, fastest, and hungriest defenses in the league. Might want to think that one over again.

Portis should call Emmitt and learn how hard Roy hits! If Roy can break a healthy Emmitt shoulder, what's going to happen to a weak Portis shoulder the first time Roy lays the wood to him?

Yeah, I want him to play and have Roy knock his shoulder off on his first run.

What does Roy Williams and horse collaring have to do with Portis? I suspect Roy won't be tackling Portis from behind. He will be plowing right into him with his shoulders squared.

Yes, I know how they always say Roy is a dirty player because he horse collared TO and hurt him. Which was before the horse collar tackle was illegal, but they are haters. What do you expect, they're Commander fans.

A new Cowboys low - hoping for injuries.

He's already injured. This is the NFL, and when a guy tried to play hurt, he will be targeted. That's just part of the game. Nobody's asking Roy to do anything dirty, but there's nothing wrong with some hard hits.

2-6 is obviously lacking the 4-1-1 on what 3-1 and the Cowboys' 3-4 will be bringing on 9-17, so I figure he'll be calling 9-1-1 well before the end of the game.

Hey, if he's tough he'll play through it... that's what Cowboys do.

If Portis wants to come back before he's completely healed, he'll have to face the consequences.

The Cowboys games are like Super Bowls to the Commanders. They beat us twice last year and they act like it was the end of nearly 8 years of humiliation.

It is a 16 game season, and Portis should focus on getting healthy, instead of facing the Cowboys. There are 14 games left after Week 2 (sorry, no playoffs Commander fans).

I am sure that the Cowboys D has to be licking their chops for a fresh 2-6 to be coming their way.

I agree. Normally, I would think that Gibbs would keep his prime offensive weapon sidelined until he was near or at 100%. 2-6 is the foundation of his offense, but the Commander mandate of 'beating Dallas by any means necessary' will probably overrule any of his football common sense. If Portis doesn't play against us, I will be very shocked.
