Prison food vs. school lunches: any difference?

by Piper Weiss, Shine Staff, on Thu May 12, 2011

School lunch is a lot like prison food, only worse. An infographic created by Good Magazine comparing the average detention grub with the average elementary school fare shows a very similar tray breakdown.

Both offer a calorie count of around 1400, and both cost little more than $2.60 per person per day. The big difference, according to their research, sourced from national statistics, is that prisoners get a little more bang for the buck.

The average prison meal and the average elementary school lunch both consist of one bread item, one starch item and one beverage. But kids get an ounce less meat and they're usually skimped on either veggies or fruits. Overall prisoners have more options and a little more heft to their meal.

I know the prison food they are discussing sure isnt Sheriff Joe Arpaios menu because he serves his inmates for about 30 cents a day.
He told them if you dont like the menu dont come back....plain and simple.

Yes and it never made sense to me to let violent offenders lift weights and consume 4000 calories a day.

I agree. We should stop feeding them altogether. This goes for ALL criminals.

So you would starve to death every single person who ever committed a crime requiring a jail sentence?

Yes! Because feeding is coddling them!

Let's starve every last one!

typical answer from someone without a clue.

Cable TV. Really good food. All things like this and more are given criminals in prison today.

If that does not tick you off then maybe you need to think of why.

"typical answer from someone without a clue."

Because getting tough in such situations has previously stopped all crime so well...

Except you've used the word "criminal" and that's a very big brush to paint with.

You didn't say murderers or rapists or anything, you said criminals. I've known people who've committed crimes, not all crimes are created equal.

Further, no one said squat about a TV, you're saying prisoners are coddled because they're being FED?

And if it's so great and comfy there, why aren't you getting a free ride there? Is it because you have morals? The same kind of morals that make you angry because we're feeding criminals (Which means all) and not starving them out in camps?

I had damn good high school lunches at McNiel High in Austin, we moved to New York after my freshman year at McNiel and the food here was absolutely awful.

And coddling them has worked better?

THere are more criminals all the time at a faster rate; and that is leaving out the drug related ones.

"Coddling" or "Not Codding" isn't the issue nor the reason why you should be angry about the criminals and crime rate.

For starters, the penal system is nothing more than taking in the prisoners, providing little rehabilitation, and then spitting them back out. Garbage in, Garbage out.

Many prisons have actually banned weights, but the prisoners find other ways to lift. They fill bags with water and curl them. Of course, they do 1,000 push-ups a day, etc.

I watch alot of Lockup, Lockdown, and Hard Time. I have a morbid fascination with prison. No, not because I've been, or want go. LOL

I've long been of the opinion that our prisons aren't meant to rehabilitate anyone. It's not surprising that a majority of long-term prisoners end up back in prison again. I think even a couple years in a prison can seriously **** someone up for life. I actually think they're cruel institutions for all but the murderers, rapists, and pedos. And for those guys a bullet is a lot cheaper. If I ever wind up in a situation where I'm facing more than a couple years of prison time I'm pretty sure I'll just exit stage left of my own accord. But, my worst offense is a speeding ticket.

Watched too much Shawshank Redemption I guess. Scared straight. LOL
