Private eye tells homeless man of inheritance

– Sat Jun 18, 8:33 pm ET

SALT LAKE CITY – A private investigator says he has tracked down a homeless Utah man and delivered some good news: He's inherited a lot of money.

David Lundberg said he found Max Melitzer pushing a shopping cart filled with personal possessions in a Salt Lake City park Saturday afternoon.

Lundberg declined to disclose how much money Melitzer will be receiving, but said the man's brother who died of cancer last year left him a "significant" amount in his will.

"He'll no longer be living on the street or in abandoned storage sheds," he told The Associated Press. "He'll be able to have a normal life, and be able to have a home, provide for himself, and purchase clothing, food and health care."

If he had a rich brother, why was he homeless? Kindof sad that it took him dying for his brother to get help. Also, i have found that many homeless people suffer from mental issues. Not sure a large amount of money would be used properly.

That's what I was thinking, and what I've found as well.

I would bet almost anything that his brother tried to help him dozens of times throughout his life. I'm sure of it. The fact that he left him the money is one clue.
I also bet many others in his life have been trying for his whole life to help.

Having worked in downtown Dallas for 20 years, I've had the chance to meet and even get to know many homeless men and women. The stories are amazing and tragic, but they almost always have many of the same common denominators. It can be exhausting and heartbreaking trying to assist some of these folks....as soon as there is light, there are massive setbacks.

I also would guess that there is a real chance (unless he has amazing financial guidance with built in restrictions plus possible psychological help) that this man is at or near his current situation within 5 years.

This is currently a great story, I really hope it works out for all involved.
