Texas prom queen who collected $17G arrested in fake cancer scam

HORIZON CITY, Texas – A Texas prom queen who raised more than $17,000 after telling classmates she was dying of cancer was arrested and charged with theft-by-deception.

Angie Gomez, 19, told her family, friends and fiance in January 2011 that she had six months to live after battling leukemia since childhood.

The Horizon City teen set up her own charity foundation, called "Achieve the Dream," and raised $17,000 from fundraisers, checks, gift cards and in-kind donations, the El Paso Times reported.

Gomez claimed that her condition caused her to miss her senior prom, and so Da Vinci High School held another in her honor in June 2011 -- the same month police received a complaint that Gomez did not appear to be ill.

A long-running investigation revealed that the hospitals Gomez said had treated her held no record of her as a patient.

She was finally held Friday at her place of work after a warrant was issued, Detective Liliana Medina said.

I'm pretty sure that faking cancer for profit is one of those "Go straight to hell, do not pass go" infractions.

my dad died of cancer last november the morning before the Cowboys/Seahawks game.....i sure wish he could have lived to have seen that game and gone out with a W....unfortunately his last game was that Eagles debacle.

i feel sorry for this girl. i really do, to have to go through such lengths just for some money....that is sad indeed. whether she needed the money or not is irrelevant....what she did was absolutely unethical and immoral. If her parents were in on it, they should be completely embarrassed and ashamed of themselves.

I believe they should have to hand back the money to each individual and apologize, all this while on national TV.....then once that is done, they must do a week's worth of menial tasks for each and every family that they dooped. By menial I mean wash the car, wash the dog, do the yard, etc.....

She is guilty of theft. The question is whether she was playing Robin Hood according to what her lawyer was inferring in the article.

A question that will probably suffer a short half life, considering a long investigation didn't turn up anything to convince authorities she doesn't belong in jail.

She belongs in jail because she stole money. I am not stating she has not stolen anything. Regardless of the police investigation, I would like to know if there is a smidgen of truth to the lawyer's comment about her getting the money for real cancer victims.

Again, she belongs in jail without question if there is even the most remote chance of her motives being genuine. I (e.g. just me, only me and no one else) am curious whether there is a glimmer of truth to what her lawyer stated.

I know I was just playing the prophet with an ample dose of my subjective opinion. :)

The bad news here is that there are low-life creeps like this in the world.

The good news is there are many wonderful people that donated $17,000+ out of their own pockets.

(Glass half full guy here)
