What do you guys make of this? Will we sign Berlin and not draft a QB? Good move, bad move? Thoughts?

Garrett coached him at Miami, he must like something about him. He's likely better than Matt Baker. If we sign Berlin, do we still draft a QB?

My personal choice would be to draft a qb and not sign Berlin or Baker.

I would agree with you. I'd rather draft a QB. What are the odds we bring in Berlin, though? I remember the guy as somewhat of an underacheiver. Big name, little production.:)

I'd be okay with the move, but I'd still rather draft a QB on the second day.

Just camp fodder... they will take four QB's into camp this year...

Berlin played for legendary Shreveport Evangel High School. He has great physical tools but supposedly isn't too bright...

Word is he had a "great" workout. I wonder if he's just camp fodder.

As a Canes fan, Berlin drove me absolutely batty with his poor, poor play.

Kellen Winslow Jr and Frank Gore carried that team when Brock was QB.

I was actually wondering if he was worse thank Kevin Kelly...yes, he was that bad.

Unless something finally "clicked" for him, then I would say yes...

As I said, he had physical tools, but made very poor game decisions in college. In HS he was unstoppable...

Perhaps JJ is punting on the QB option in the draft since he figures he's now got good ole Brad Johnson on the roster. Maybe he's thinking he can put this need off another year and concentrate on other requirements draft day.
The fact that Garrett knows the guy makes this interesting.

Anyway, great post, thanks for sharing with us.

At this stage of free agency, the odds favor Jones drafting a quarterback.

Only these excerpts from his previous draft profile:

Negatives: Berlin is a shorter-than-ideal quarterback with adequate muscle development, decent timed speed and short arms … Berlin is a classic drop-back passer who seems to lose his poise and play with poor instincts when pressured … When he has to go long, his receivers will generally have to adjust in their routes or work back for the ball, as it seems to die in flight … When he is pressured, Berlin will bail out and scramble at the first flash of a pass rush and his lack of accuracy throwing on the move will usually get him into trouble … When he has to hit his receivers along the perimeter, he does not do a great job of timing those throws … As a senior, he was so conscious of throwing the ball into traffic that he sometimes held on to the ball too long waiting for the route to develop, resulting in costly sacks and fumbles … Ball security has been an issue with Berlin, as he has fumbled 16 times over the last two years … While he possesses good timed speed and will buy time rolling out of the pocket, he is not the type of player that can cause a defense any damage by running with the ball … This is strictly a drop-back quarterback with marginal size and adequate arm strength.

Sounds a lot like David Carr and Vince Young.

Never hurts to keep looking at players. Sign him to a minimum, you can still take a 4th QB (from the draft).

As for 'Is Jerry doing this to keep from having to draft a QB" - there is no way for us to know that. We don't have the information available to formulate an opinion.

This could all get very interesting.
