TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Quarterback Chris Simms agreed to a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wednesday.
The signing comes two days before Simms would have become a restricted free agent and allows the Bucs to keep the quarterback who started the last 10 games in the 2005 season after Brian Griese went down with a knee injury.
Simms, drafted by the Bucs in 2003, won six of his 10 starts and led the team to an NFC South championship. He completed 191-of-313 passes for 2,035 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
In a playoff game against Washington, the 25-year-old Simms set team postseason records by completing 25 passes on 38 attempts.

It's a one year deal. CBA has no effect on his deal in particular, plus he was losing ground to Griese every day he didn't sign it.

Actually I think Yeager has a good point. He will be signed till 2007, which I guess will then become an Uncapped year or is it 2008? Either way, he will set to be FA at the right moment if so.

This is absolutly correct. Simms is not lossing ground to anybody. He's younger and the Bucs have already shown that there interested in keeping him by tagging him already. The contract extension is also smart because now he can go into next year and demand big dollars if he has success this upcoming season.

Smart move on his part. Bucs must really like this guy. It would have cost any team a 1st and a 3rd to sign him plus bonus money.

Expect to see more one-year contracts of FAs soon if the CBA really doesn't go through. Teams can take chances on the older guys who they need to plug the gaps; players get a chance to go for the gold in '07. The only hitch is that all the money gets paid this year but there are a lot of financially healthy teams. This might be a great idea for the Cowboys with guys like McGinest, Mawae, Fabrini, etc. Of course the older guys are looking for longer term security but they'll only be one year older next year and staring down into the uncapped abyss of green love.
