Question about military marches

Maybe someone who has served in the military knows what this is. In viewing old newsreel footage of foreign militaries, I noticed that sometimes they would have troops marching in a parade and then instead of facing straight ahead, all the soldiers would look together to the right. Maybe they were looking at their commanding officer or some other leader.

Does anyone know what's up with that? I would have thought that marching soldiers would always just look straight ahead. Is the marching while looking toward the right some type of respect for the leader thing? Is it something that the US military ever does or is it a foreign thing?

It is a form of formation salute to the dignitary or superior officer. This happens in a parade only.

And the US military has never used that strange goose-stepping style of marching that some other countries use, right? I would think that would cause people to develop knee problems.

In the Marines while at Boot Camp the Battalions would March differently and say a phrase different. " Yes Drill Sergeant " or " Sir Yes Sir" or " Ay Sir". I think they did it different to identify the recruit what Battalion they were from. Also strange was the haircut between Parris Island & San Diego. Parris Island were constantly shave bald throughout Boot Camp, but San Diego would grow High n Tights ( looks like a horseshoe).

Just one of the differences between Real Marines and Hollywood Marines.
