Center Garth Gerhart has established himself as one of Arizona State's top linemen. We talked recently about the spring and the future.

What was your assessment of the offense in the spring game?
"We took a little bit of a step backwards. We were struggling a little with the offensive line. We had some guys hurt and we weren't communicating as we should. But it was good to see where we're at going into the fall."

You battled injuries your first two seasons. How do you feel?
"Actually, I feel really good. This is the best I felt since I hurt my toes last year. At the beginning of spring ball, my toes weren't used to it, I wasn't used to playing on my feet. But now I feel great."

How did you react when you heard guard Jon Hargis tore his ACL?
"I was real disappointed. Losing Jon is a big letdown to our team. He's a fifth-year senior, he's been doing it for two years straight now, going on his third year. He was going to be a big-time offensive lineman for us, so it's a letdown. Not only because of his play on the field, but he's also a leader off the field. Now I'm pretty much the only guy on the offensive line that's been there and done it. I'm stepping up, trying to help our young guys out. Telling them we need them in the weight room and getting them ready to help us next year."

Where does that leave the line?
"I like our depth. We have a redshirt freshman like Kody Koebensky and some JC transfers who will have to step in and play right off the bat. Kody has great form, he just needs to get in the weight room. Once he gets his strength, I think he'll be real good."

After two losing seasons, do you sense a hunger in the locker room?
"I do. When Coach (Noel) Mazzone came in I noticed a huge change in our offense. We probably wouldn't have scored a point last year in the spring game. The scrimmages before this have just given us some hope that our offense is actually going to do something this year."

Which quarterback had the better spring -- Brock Osweiler or Steven Threet?
"I don't know, really. It's probably still an even battle. Hopefully, one steps up pretty soon and takes the job because we need a big-time leader at quarterback this year."

Your brother Toby went to the Minnesota Vikings in the second round of the NFL draft. What was that like?
"I flew there and hung out with him a little (before the draft.) He's super excited. He was getting nervous as the picks were going on. He kept looking at his phone. It's kind of surreal, because as little kids we talked about playing in the NFL together. He got his job so hopefully one day I can get mine."
