“To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.” R.E.M.

It's probably time. Every since Bill Berry left, the vibe hasn't been the same to me. Loved them in the early to mid 1980's. After Life's Rich Pagaent, things went down hill, IMO.

I never did and still don't like listening to their records, but dang did they put on a great live show here in Austin one year. I mean, GOOD live show.

C'mon this is as good as anything they ever have done. Might be my favorite power pop rock song.

Not my cup of tea, but definitely respected them as a band. A little too political for my taste.

Having spent several years in Athens, Ga and having a few friends hooked into local music scene at the time has yielded me several REM stories and encounters. I only ever got the nerve to talk to one of them though (Mike Mills at the Engine Room, a now-defunct bar) about politics one night for about 25 minutes.

I remember the surprise show when Bertis Downs ran around downtown Athens establishments trying to get folks to come to the Georgia Theatre to see a local band, and REM ended up emerging from the stage near the end of that band's set to play for an hour or so.

I'm so sad that it's all over ;_;

One of my top three favorite bands. And I'll put their first five albums up against anyone's work.

It's a sad day for me, but at the same time I can't profess to have enjoyed much of their work since New Adventures in Hi-Fi. I think they lost a lot of who they were when Bill Berry left.
