Actor Russell Johnson, best known as Professor in the 1960s TV sitcom "Gilligan's Island," died Thursday, his agent said. Johnson was 89.
Johnson played the iconic role of Professor Roy Hinkley, whose scientific schemes to get the castaways rescued were always foiled by Gilligan's bumbling.

He died at his home in Washington, where he lived with his wife, Connie. She and their daughter, Kimberly, were at his side, said agent Mike Eisenstadt. Johnson is also survived by a stepson, Court, and a grandson, he said.

Johnson worked up until his death, signing autographs over the holidays, said Eisenstadt. He called Johnson's death "unexpected."

He was "just a positive and nice guy" who always treated people with respect, his agent said.

He was also in a time-traveler episode of the "Twilight Zone".

Sorry to hear of this.

Had he bludgeoned Giligan to death with a coconut soon after the boat washed ashore, he would have been off that island in just a few days.

Also played a heroic scientist in Roger Corman's The Attack of the Crab Monster.

Never saw him in anything oher than Gilligans. Wonder what else he did.

Only two left now :( Do they even show Gilligans Island reruns anymore? Used to love watching them as a kid.

I think he was good on a couple Twilight Zone episodes as well.

Yep.

I saw Dawn Wells on an episode of "Chopped" a couple weeks ago. 74 or so. She hasn't changed a great deal.

Liked him as the professor he spent every episode coming up with some contraption to get everyone rescued. He made a radio transmitter out of a coconut. He built a jet pack out of bamboo and a hot air balloon. He thought of everything except fixing the hole in the castaways boat.

Still on TVLand. Watch an episode yesterday afternoon. The one with the phone line that gets washed onshore after a bad storm during the night.
