Rookie lineman McQuistan gets another opportunity

ALAMEDA -- Rookie Paul McQuistan started the first two games this season at right guard. His inconsistent play compelled Raiders coach Art Shell to replace McQuistan with fellow rookie Kevin Boothe.

McQuistan spent the past three months or so grasping the nuances of the NFL game, honing his technique and waiting for another shot. It's here 11 games later as a result of an ankle and knee injuries to Corey Hulsey.

McQuistan said he is a better player now than he was when he was thrust into a starting role at right guard fresh from college. He admits that he needed work in "every area."

Shell agrees.

"He's improved tremendously from that point until now," Shell said. "Plus, coming to the left side he's more close to home. He moves better on the left side than he does on the right side."

McQuistan's goal now?

"Try to continue to work hard, get in the game plan and not let the guys down," McQuistan said.

He played on the left side in college so he figures to be more comfortable this time around. Also, the Cincinnati Bengals defense doesn't get confused for the San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Ravens -- the two teams McQuistan started against -- very often.

"You can get better in practice, getting reps, working on certain things," McQuistan said. "I can improve hand use a little bit and not leaning forward as much, sitting back a little bit."

Extra points

Hulsey, defensive end Lance Johnstone (knee) and receiver Jerry Porter (hip) are listed as doubtful for Sunday's game. An MRI on Hulsey showed nothing "structurally wrong," Shell said. Johnstone has been told that he needs surgery. He said he intends to seek a second opinion. ... Sebastian Janikowski (back) kicked some in practice. He is listed as probable for Sunday's game. He missed practice time last week and then missed three field goal attempts in last Sunday's game.
