Raiders | Talks off with Hawthorne
Mon, 25 Jul 2005 20:13:08 -0700

Adam Schefter, of <A href="http://www.kffl.com/link/156">NFL.com, reports the Oakland Raiders and the agent for rookie DT Anttaj Hawthorne are no longer discussing a contract for the team's sixth-round draft pick. He was projected as a first-day pick before he ran into some personal problems.

I know we scouted this guy a lot, and I was surprised that we didn't pull the trigger in the Fifth or Sixth round. Maybe they decided he wasn't worth the trouble or maybe they didn't think it was a position of enough need. IF it was the latter, maybe think about a trade?

I assume his agent is trying to argue he is worth late 1st/early 2d round money because many people had him slotted there.

If the Boys think he is physically up to it and just needs to mature mentally, why not give the Raiders a call and see if we can get him in exchange for some camp fodder (assuming he will agree to a contract with lots of unlikely incentives)?

Because Parcells said he's too old for headaches... Hawthorne is one gigantic headache in the making.

For the Raiders to have called off negoations, it sounds to me like Hawthorne failed another drug test or is grossly overweight.

I agree, he must have really screwed up, again. I couldn't believe how far he dropped in the draft after being projected as high as the top-10 in some early mocks. He has pretty much thrown away an incredible opportunity for the sake of temporary pleasure. Parcells & Jones were right to avoid him but he fits in perfectly with the Raiders.

The list of players we passed on that will be headaches is growing. It's looking more and more like we really did our homework for the draft more than even I thought.

Don't even bother. It's too hot out there and too late in the contract period to go after this guy. We would be best served with going with what we have not some one's over inflated ego.

Agree that we don't even need to consider this turd. Does anyone remember that early on one of the mocks had us drafting him in the first round?

That's what my Scooby Doo detective kit tells me too.

I agree, i see thread after thread about a player we scouted that has headaches. Hopefully we are finally away from the draft of 2002
