He was a better pitching coach as a starting pitcher than Leo Mazzone ever was as a coach.

To clarify, where Maddux helps you is in scouting. When he was a pitcher for the Braves it was well known that if Maddux disagreed with the advance scout's report on a particular hitter, they always went with Maddux rather than the scout.

Smoltz, Glavine, Avery, Neagle, and others all said they benefited from it.

But I'm biased... Maddux is my one of my favorite athletes ever.

Interesting hire. It's hard to argue with it of course - Maddux was easily one of the smartest pitchers to ever play the game, and understood how to pitch in a way others didn't (setting up hitters/keeping them guessing and off balance). It seems a little like being a co-pitching coach with his brother.

I mean the kind of movement he had on a baseball. Let's face it, this guy was no flame thrower. His top end was barely in the low 90's, but the ball had radar.

He was the best fielding Pitcher I have ever seen. Nothing but huge respect for this man. I loved watching him pitch.

When you have the kind of control he did, where the catcher sets up sells the pitch to the umpire.

You're thinking of Tom Glavine. And that was exaggerated.
