Great addition to the team. We need a catcher and we just got one. Not an all star but a good player. I am happy to have him.

he was just traded for vernon wells, now traded for frank francisco.

so essentially Anaheim just gave us Mike Napoli for nothing, while they traded francisco for wells......in a twisted way.

either way, I am happy about this. We need catching help desperately.

I know Napoli has a good bat, but is he really that much of a defensive catcher?

oh and bill jones is speculating that after talking to young this weekend he thinks the team is not done and that either young or kinsler will be dealt for a pitcher.

interesting. I would hate that, even though we need pitching.

I would absolutely hate to see either of those guys go.

no, but there are none anywhere.

I imagine he will be like what he was with the angels. Maybe catch 75-85 games and play some first base and DH.

this team like most is in a bind at catcher. I think this helps.

Defensively there are no awards coming his way, but he is 29 and signed through 2013 I think and can hit.

Otherwise its treanor and teagarden.

Trading Kinsler would be horrid and honestly after as willing as Young has been to make position adjustments, he deserves to be kept around.

As for the deal itself, Napoli sucks behind the plate, but has legit power. I could see him playing a little first, a little catcher, some DH and just pounding the piss out of the ball, especially in this lineup.

I could see him hitting 30-35 here. Also, the Angels sure gotta be pleased that they get to face him.

I like having Napoli's bat, but it's going to be struggle finding ways to get him regular plate appearances - that is, unless Young or Kinsler are moved like this suggests. Moving one of those two would open up the DH spot.

This guy was actually listed first on the depth chart before Napoli was acquired:

Napoli is not a full time catcher. He'll play some 1B, some DH, and catch some, but if he's catching every day you're going to have some irate pitchers on your hands.

I assume by 3 we are talking about Teagarden being the odd man out?

There is no need to move Young or Kinsler to create AB's. There will be plenty to go around. You now a VERY flexible and DEEP team that won't be hamstrung by one bad injury or someone not stepping their game to the next level.

Young - 3B, SS, 2B, 1B and DH
Napoli - C, 3B, 1B and DH
Murphy - RF, CF, LF and DH

We aren't paying Beltre $80 million to share time at 3B with Young and Napoli. If he stays healthy he will probably play 150+ games at 3B.

Mitch Moreland is slated to start at 1B, and assuming he plays as expected there won't be that much time to share between Young and Napoli. They may rest Moreland against some lefthanded pitchers, so that may open up a few AB's here and there.

I'm not sure what Murphy has to do with Napoli at all except that he might take some of the DH opportunities away from him.

Napoli's AB's are going to have to come from catching and from DH when Young fills in for someone in the IF. Of course, someone usually misses time with injuries, so that may increase the number of AB's over the season, but when the IF is healthy there won't be much opportunity for Napoli other than at catcher.

We already have two catchers on the team. Napoli isn't a great defensive catcher nor is he a great offensive player. He hits for power WHEN he makes contact, but thats about it. I think he hit in the 220s last year with 20 something HRs.

I understand why they got rid of Francisco, but if Napoli was the best they could do to get a right handed hitter to play first base, that was a piss poor job. I think I would prefer to stick with Moreland though it appears that is plan and Napoli was signed as an insurance policy if Moreland wasn't cutting it.

This definitely wasn't an upgrade of any sort.

This is a great trade. Napoli has killed LHP lately, in fact he's (surprisingly) one of the better guys in the league at it.

I think he's going to platoon with Mitch and not play that much C.
