Where is Dallas already strong before free agency begins? Where at they weakest? We ranked all the roster positions ahead of next week’s market opening.
By Jess Haynie Mar 10, 2024

With free agency starting in just a few days and the draft not far behind, the 2024 NFL offseason is about to heat up. For the Dallas Cowboys, it’s a critical juncture in what’s shaping up as a do-or-die season for the head coach and perhaps even some of the top players. Where does Dallas need to focus its attention this offseason to give themselves the best shot at success next season?

Let’s take one last look at that analysis and compare the positions by their perceived strength going into the offseason.

1. Tight End
2. Quarterback
3. Guard
4. Safety
5. Specialists
6. Wide Receiver
7. Defensive End
8. Defensive Tackle
9. Cornerback
10. Center
11. Offensive Tackle
12. Linebacker
13. Running Back

Scariest one I agree with is #11 (assuming Tyron not back) and #13.

Diggs won’t be 100% but agree with BobHaze that #10 is way too low for a cornerback duo that leads NFL in interceptions last few years.

I put Guard at #1 ONLY if Martin is healthy. Can’t beat that with a young Tyler Smith.

If Tyler Smith remains at guard then that is the strongest position on the team by a bunch. Not even close. He and Martin may make up the best OL guard duo in the league.

I am assuming this list was determined assuming we do not sign any of our own free agents.

In terms of need, I would put LB and DT up higher. DE is also higher if we assume Armstrong and Fowler are gone. CB is a need if Lewis and Gilmore both leave but not as much as DE and DT if we don't re-sign Hankins or Gallimore.

Guard becomes a need is they move Tyler Smith to OT. Then OT becomes less of a need. Of course C is a need if they don't sign Biadasz, but I wonder how much worse Hoffman would be than Biadasz.

I think WR is a need because it looks like Gallup is moving on or Dallas is moving on from him. Neither Tolbert or Cooks excites me, frankly. Specialists is probably the only position where we don't need to do anything. TE is a slight need but not if the other TEs not named Ferguson pick it up.

I would love to see the Cowboys make 3 free agent pickups this offseason. DT, LB, and RB. If they do something at these 3 positions then I am comfortable they can fill the rest with draft picks, including RB depth.

We have lots of holes to fill in free agency and the draft:

RB - we need 2 - this is an area where I could see Jerry making a bit of a splash due to the RB market being cheap - Maybe a free agent and a later round draft pick
LB - probably need 2 - one starting level if they really like Overshown and consider Parsons a LBer - the other LBer would be depth
CB - will probably need a 3rd CB - No one on the current roster is proven behind Diggs and Bland
OT/OG - Depends on whether they keep Tyler at OG or not. Either way we will need a starting level OG or OT
C - Need a starter
DT - Need a starter here to go next to Osa since Mazi hasn't proven he can be the guy yet - Wouldn't mind see Hankins signed as a BACKUP
DE - Someone to start in Armstrong's place - Wish Sam Williams would see the light but he just seems too stupid
WR - we will need a #3. Gallup is as good as gone. Can Tolbert or Jalen Brooks step into that role? May or may not have to do something here.

So I am seeing us as needing possibly 7 starter level players. That is a lot to ask for in one offseason.

Linebacker, Running Back, Center, and DT are huge needs. There are a ton of good WR in the draft so we can get one there as well.

Please explain why the QB position is more of a need than RB, Tackle, Linebacker, DT, positions?? Or are you just trolling??
Have you not watched this team the past 8 years?

A prime Emmitt in that GB wouldnt be able to carry this sorry QB

At this point the team has so many needs at so many positions. If if IF they do not fill some of those needs in FA or via trade then that No. 24 first round pick pretty much becomes the "best player available." Personally if it was not a guard or a TE then I would take the guy most likely to be an NFL starter at 24. That includes QB by the way.....

that list is pretty accurate I put them in that order as well that's why the front office should be looking at #13 and up as they address free agency undrafted free agents and the draft over the next six months yes people it's six months worth of off season to get prepared for a season isn't all happened this week.... The fan base seems to think it happens all in one week they down if we don't sign someone in the first five days a free agency but come on people you've seen all these names being released from teams lot of teams are feeling that salary cap pinch and there's a lot of good names out there...
