A ransomware attack paralyzed the networks of at least 200 U.S. companies on Friday, according to a cybersecurity researcher whose company was responding to the incident.

Criminals targeted a software supplier called Kaseya, using its network-management package as a conduit to spread the ransomware through cloud-service providers.

The privately held Kaseya says it is based in Dublin, Ireland, with a U.S. headquarters in Miami.

Crazy how we can face lock or fingerprint lock a cellphone but major cyber companies can't put similar locks on their systems. I say that because a keycard and pass word obviously isn't enough.

I worked in cybersecurity for a major financial corporation for years and I can tell you it is very complicated - and expensive. Letting people access your systems from all over the world means some bad guys will have a path to those same systems. Companies that are not in the financial industry probably think it is not as important because they don't have much financial business going on. When Willy Sutton was asked why he robbed banks he said, "because that's where the money is", but the game has changed due to ransomware. Now everyone needs to to focus on security.

The fact is the bad guys have time and resources. They can spend all day every day looking for an opening in a network. They can fail 10,000 times and still win. The good guys can be right 99.99% of the time and still lose the game. I bet there are millions of vulnerable systems in the US. The bad guys finding a few hundred is not surprising. Hopefully it will get everyone to pay attention to the responsibility of securing their systems.
