When former Dolphins V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells slid into the role of consultant, we speculated that Parcells hoped to give G.M. Jeff Ireland and coach Tony Sparano an opportunity to show that they can get the job done before Parcells leaves for good, opening the door for owner Stephen Ross to hire a new football czar, who presumably would then fire (sooner or later) Ireland and Sparano.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that Parcells' precisely hoped to do just that -- protect Ireland and Sparano.

Sparano would be unemployed for about a day. Im would be surprised if there are 4 players left over on his roster from the roster he inherited 2 years ago. He took a 1-15 team and has taken them to 20-14 in two years with a division title.
