[/URL]So with the 49ers at 0-5 and with coach Mike Singletary potentially in trouble and owner Jed York proclaiming that the Niners will still win the division, pulling off that unprecedented feat would save Singletary's job, right?

Nope.

Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reports that Singletary must do "some extraordinary things" in order to "have any hope" of coming back in 2011. In this regard, Cole says that "extraordinary" likely means winning "a playoff contest or two."

John Madden on Singletary's sideline tactics: "That's not coaching"

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 12, 2010 4:45 PM ET
Mike Singletary wanted to see how Alex Smith would respond to possibly being benched, so he tested Smith by yelling at him in front of the whole country. Singletary liked Smith's response, so he kept him in the game.

If you think that entire episode was a little silly, a Hall of Fame coach agrees with you.

"That's something that, a lot of things go on in a game that you're not proud of as a coach," Madden said on KCBS radio via the San Francisco Chronicle.

"That's really not part of coaching, that's sometimes I worry about that. I see youth football and I see high school football and coaches yelling at players and I cringe when I see it. I think people get the picture that's what coaching is and believe me, that's not what coaching is."

I had a coach like that. I remember the final game of my sophmore season in highschool football, getting beat badly by a team and enduring the ride home on the bus. Coach sat up front and went into this long monologue about how most of us weren't athletes and how we'd never cut it as a team.

When we all got off the bus we still had to turn in our gear and uniforms for the year before we went home. It was only in the equipment rooms and locker rooms that some of the assistant coaches came by to tell us how things really were. Not to lose hope, to work through the offseason and come back and try again, etc. Tips on how to improve.

That sophmore coach ultimately took over as varsity coach. They haven't had an over .500 season since he took over.

That long bus drive home is something I won't forget.

EDIT: I'd also like to point out that we went 8-4 that season!

Seemed like the little talking-to worked.

Smith played better after it.

At some point, I don't think you have much of an option.

Smith has some years under his belt and if he isn't being receptive to "traditional" coaching tactics, you might as well tell the guy you're gonna sit him if he doesn't pull his head out of his butt.

But he's so passionate, unlike Wade. [/sarcasm]

I like Singletary, but it won't shock me if he takes a fall.
