Report: 'Skins offered Eagles Haynesworth

A lot to get to, but I wanted to get this post up quickly.

Adam Caplan of Scout.com just unloaded an interesting nugget during a TV appearance on CSN.

Per Caplan, the Commanders offered defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to the Eagles as part of the Donovan McNabb deal, but the Birds didn't want him.

"The Commanders actually offered - I'm told by two league sources - Albert Haynesworth, the oustanding defensive tackle, but Albert Haynesworth has an enormous contract," Caplan said, adding that Haynesworth was a pain to the Commanders' previous coaching staff.

Haynesworth, who will turn 29 in June, signed a $100M contract last offseason with the Commanders, which included $41M in guaranteed money. He received - get this - a $21M roster bonus on April 1. His 2010 and 2011 salaries of $3.6M and $5.4M are guaranteed, according to contract details.

The Eagles have two good defensive tackles in Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley, but neither guy was on the field on third downs last season, and neither has shown the ability to pressure the quarterback up the middle.

Haynesworth had a disappointing debut season with the Commanders, but the thought of him teaming up with Trent Cole deserves at least a moment of thought amid all the other things that are being discussed this evening.

Much more to come.

Actually pretty smart to give him 21 million of his 40 million guarantee now, in the uncapped year. His salary the next two don't look that bad. Now that the bonus has been paid I would take him.

See this is what I think about the bears and the stupid contact they gave Peppers. desperate teams do stupid things (well mainly desperate coaches and GM's who's jobs are on the line)

....and now LaRon Landry.

Donovan McNabb trade: Albert Haynesworth, LaRon Landry reportedly offered to Eagles
The Donovan McNabb trade story is about more than a quarterback. The Commanders reportedly offered defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to the Eagles in exchange for McNabb.

There are multiple reports now that Haynesworth was part of the negotiations, and we'd heard this weekend that the team was shopping the talented defensive tackle around, too (to whom, though, wasn't clear until Sunday night).

If true, it's very telling that the team was willing to part ways with Haynesworth after just one season. Owner Daniel Snyder signed him to the mega-deal just 13 months ago; to send him packing now means that the new regime 1) isn't certain how he fits into its plans, or 2) simply doesn't want him in their building. Shanahan has made it clear that he wants to see commitment from every player and he's disappointed that Haynesworth isn't participating in the team's offseason conditioning program.

Depending on when the Commanders offered Haynesworth, it could also show just how desperate they are to get rid of him. Last Thursday, Haynesworth was paid a $21 million contract bonus. If the Commanders were still trying to include him in the trade over the weekend, that means they'd be okay with the possibility of paying Haynesworth tens of millions of dollars for essentially 12 football games. It's more likely Haynesworth was part of the discussions before the bonus was paid out, which simply means that despite the major financial commitment made a year ago in free agency, the new staff is not nearly as keen on Haynesworth as the old one.

There are clearly no sacred cows at Commanders Park. Jason Campbell's days are numbered (although the team has no leverage in any deal with potential suitors), and reports also indicate that the Commanders offered Philadelphia safety LaRon Landry, the Commanders' first-round pick in the 2007 draft. That, coupled with the fact that Eric Berry was in town for a pre-draft visit, could lead you to believe the Commanders feel they can afford to upgrade mightily at the safety position.

A year ago at this time, it seemed like Haynesworth and Landry were both crucial cogs to the Commanders' defense. Quite a change if their most important role right now is as trade bait.

Jason Campbell Excited To Have Donovan McNabb Backing Him Up

WASHINGTON, DC--Commanders starting quarterback Jason Campbell said he is “thrilled” to have former Eagles QB Donovan McNabb backing him up this year after the 'Skins acquired McNabb on Sunday night from the Eagles.

“I couldn’t be happier to have Donovan on board,” Campbell said in a phone interview on Sunday night. “Depth is so important at the quarterback position nowadays. If you don't have two quality guys on your

roster you’re asking for trouble. I'm glad they made this move now instead of waiting for me to get hurt ”

Campbell dispelled any notions that he would be upset by a trade for one of the league’s premier quarterbacks.

“Why would I be upset?” said Campbell. “We just acquired a great quarterback. That's just going to make us better. What’s that? No, I’m not concerned about job security. Mike Shanahan told me when he took this job that I was his quarterback. I got his word. So I don't even know why we're having this conversation, really. This is weird.”

Mike Shanahan said he expected Campbell to be the team's starting quarterback when he took the job in January. Now, the coach says, things have changed.

“I know I said that Jason was our guy, but circumstances have changed,” Shanahan told reporters on Sunday night. “We had an opportunity to get a quarterback like Donovan McNabb and we couldn't pass it up. That being said, Jason’s still going to be a big part of our team and will help out a lot. He's going to have to prepare week in and week out like he's going to be the starter...even though that's kind of a waste of time at this point.”

Campbell later brushed off Shanahan remarks, insisting that he would be the starting quarterback.

“That just coach being diplomatic,” Campbell said. “I get that. I really do. And I feel bad for saying this, but Donovan is not going to be starting for this team. It’s going to be me. If you only were there when Mike looked me in the eye and said, ‘Jason, you’re my guy,’ you’d understand. So no offense, Donovan, but this is my team.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter later reported that the Commanders were shopping Campbell for a seventh round pick.
