Report: Suspension of Ben Roethlisberger coming by Tuesday
Posted by Mike Florio on April 18, 2010 10:44 PM ET
On Thursday, Steelers president Art Rooney said that the team would be working with the league regarding the imposition of discipline on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and that no suspension would be imminent. "I don't expect we will be announcing any final decisions until the week after the draft, at the earliest," Rooney said.

On the surface, it's a smart move. With the schedule being released on Tuesday night and the draft launching Thursday, the announcement of a Roethlisberger suspension would serve only to distract from a week of great NFL news and events.

Then again, maybe the league in its infinite P.R. wisdom (and we're not being sarcastic, for a change) has decided to slip the suspension through the five hole during a week in which we're otherwise waiting for the schedule on Tuesday and focusing on the draft, which starts Thursday. If the league announces the suspension in the middle of Tuesday afternoon, the dominant Wednesday morning news in every market but Pittsburgh will be local team's (teams') schedule. Then the draft will take over and by the following Monday we'll still be breaking down the picks and getting ready for minicamps.

If the league holds the suspension until the week after the draft, it'll take on a life of its own.

And so maybe it makes sense that, as Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reports, the NFL will announce a suspension of Roethlisberger on Monday or Tuesday. Of this week.

Per Cole, Roethlisberger is unlikely to fight the suspension.

That said, we don't rule out an appeal if Roethlisberger gets slapped with more than four games. In that case, an appeal could persuade Commissioner Roger Goodell to reduce the penalty, creating maximum impact in connection with the initial announcement and then generating a sense that the Personal Conduct Policy currently works as written, even though Goodell issues the penalty and presides over the appeal of his own decision.

We're thinking the end result will be four games. We won't be surprised if it's eight.

Either way, it looks like we'll have the answer soon.

Impossible, Joe has already said the Commissioner was going to do nothing as it regards RuthlessRaper.

If they suspend him for 8 games they may as well trade him because that will probably cost them the season.

I'm guessing 4 games.

Ben Roethlisberger-QB- Steelers Apr. 18 - 10:23 pm et

Ben Roethlisberger will be suspended by the NFL on Monday or Tuesday, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports.

Even though Roethlisberger wasn't criminally charged by the Ocmulgee (Ga.) Circuit District Attorney, the detailed police report is apparently enough to land Big Ben on the sidelines. The length of the suspension is unknown at this point. It's believed that it will range from 2-4 games and Roethlisberger is not expected to fight the punishment.

Might not be the commissioner, might be the steelers imposing it, because the commissioner said he wouldnt decide anything till a week after the draft;

Irvin got 5 and he didn't hurt anyone. That's what gets me.

exactly, the cowboys have always been hit hard by nfl, commissioners; but when it comes to the patriots or steelers they get off fairly easy

It should be 4 to 8 games if Goodell wants to make any kind of a statement regarding players' conduct. If the decision is anything less than 4 games, then I think there is something critically wrong with the present system. When another person gets taken advantage of physically, which is what this case seems, there should be definite repercussions.

Hahaha yes!!! I hate the Steelers with a passion. They just became underdogs in the first four games, and Ruthlessraper is finally getting some disciplinary action.

It might also be that Mr. Cole from Yahoo.com is talking out of his butt and the Commissioner will wait.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Irvin also found guilty of a crime? Right or wrong, Ben wasn't even charged.

He might not have been Charged...but this is the second time he has been accused of imposing himself on a female. There is also a pretty detailed police report of his idiotic actions...and quite frankly I think he does deserve to be punished.
He represents the NFL when he is out in the public eye , and if that had been a COWBOY...they would be demanding a public hanging.
I hope he gets suspended for a min. of 4 games, and I think that is still too light beings this is the second time around for him!

He'll get one game, if he was a cowboy it would be half the season at least. Goodell (I mean Badell) sucks.

Interesting that Rooney was making that comment. If that had been Jerry folks would have been moaning that it should be Goodell making the announcement.

Why is it always an even number of games?

The guy basically raped a girl. Who would cry if it were a season? Just Steelers fans would. Everyone else would be on board w/ that
