Rocky is a retired military dog who will be put down on August 24 if he’s not adopted. He served three tours in Iraq and desperately needs a loving home to enjoy his final years. Pets for Patriots is responding to a request to help create awareness of this veteran’s plight. We have spoken to authorities at Camp Pendleton in San Diego and confirmed this story.

There is some coarse language in the comments sections, but I thought I'd post this and maybe a Zoner can find a place in their heart and their home for this dog who has undoubtedly saved many an American service person's life.

Looks like they've received an overwhelming response of adoption applications for him. I wasn't planning on getting a dog any time soon, but if there wasn't a good response I was going to throw my name in the hat.

PS - always gets ugly when military wives get into it.

Poor fella... He's been adopted so I'm glad someone is going to take care of him...

He certainly took care of our soldiers and deserves a good home...

That made the rounds in all the animal rescue groups on my Facebook account yesterday. When I saw it being posted around like that I knew it wouldn't take long. :)

UPDATE 8/18/11 9:25 AM ET: ROCKY IS SAVED!! We have been informed that Rocky will be adopted. Please DO NOT CALL Camp Pendleton, Lackland AFB or Pets for Patriots regarding his case; we are all overloaded with a deluge of inquiries about his plight. THANK YOU to all who have answered Rocky’s call and helped to assure his final years will be spent with a loving family

Ridiculous that they were even thinking about putting him down in the first place.

Take care of the dog...period.

Serves his country and that's how they were going to treat him...pathetic.

I gotta say I'm really happy this dog was adopted. Honestly. I love animals and the story was a bit heartbreaking. Dogs deserve to be taken care of, they are amazing animals.

But the bold is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. I'm sure the dog is a massive patriot and salutes the flag each day.

As if he didn't "serve his country" he'd be less worthy of adoption.

Whether you think it's stupid or not that's what he's considered to have done...just like a Police Dog serves the community that they live in.

"Before dogs serve in the military"

http://thedogwriter.com/index.php?o...ican-military-american-dogs&catid=4&Itemid=15

Dogs have been fighting alongside U.S. soldiers for more than 100 years, seeing combat in the Civil War and World War I. But their service was informal; only in 1942 were canines officially inducted into the U.S. Army. Today, they're a central part of U.S. efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan -- as of early 2010 the U.S. Army had 2,800 active-duty dogs deployed (the largest canine contingent in the world). And these numbers will continue to grow as these dogs become an ever-more-vital military asset.

All Dogs or Cats are the same to me...they would all be adopted and not killed if it were up to me.

I happened to donated money and food to my local no kill animal shelter here all the time.

Oh and I guess you missed this one too.

War Dog Memorial

fulldoberman.jpg

A noble Doberman pinscher represents hundreds of heroic war dogs that served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Although most were Doberman pinschers, German shepherds, Labrador retrievers and occasionally, a collie served during the war as sentries, messengers, and scouts. But they also served other roles to the Marines who served with them...devoted friend, confidant, trusted companion.

I think his point was that this dog was put into harms way on a daily basis in order to protect our troops...

Does is make him more worthy of adoption? There is no definitive answer although I certainly believe some animals are more worthy of adoption than others given circumstances...
