Former Cowboy safety Brig Owens died on June 21, 2022. He was drafted by the Cowboys in 1965 but spent the season on the taxi squad before being traded to the Washington Commanders.

I didn't realize Owens was ever a Cowboy. I only remember him as a Commander.

Owens was a collegiate QB at Cincinnati, where the Bearcats went 16-5 with him as the starter.
Way before my time.

Owens was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round (89th overall) of the 1965 NFL Draft and converted to safety.

He spent most of the year on the team's taxi squad. On August 30, 1966, he was traded, along with Jake Kupp and Mitch Johnson, to the Washington Commanders for Jim Steffen and a fifth-round draft choice (#119-Willie Parker)~ Wikipedia

Hard to even consider him a Cowboy he played his entire 12 year career with Washington. Didn’t even know we drafted him. He was one we let get away because he ended up with 36 career INTs with 3 pick-sixes. He developed into a very solid player.

Owens was part of that Washington defense that took apart the Cowboys in the 1972 NFC title game.

Same here. I've only heard of him referring to his tenure with Washington.

Same here. Remember watching him play against the Cowboys on TV; usually during the game telecast a fact like that is mentioned.
To ChuckA1 and Jake - don't feel indequate about it. Owens spent his rookie season on the taxi squad - he never played in a regular season game as a Dallas Cowboy.
Briggs was a great college quarterback - who was switched to defense on being drafted into the NFL.
Reognized as one of the all-time players for our rival's franchise.
In Brigman P. Owens (what a unique first name) - I hope his family, friends, etc., take solace that he lived and accomplished much in his long life after his NFL playing career.

Just imagine Brig Owens was drafted by the Cowboys and Chuck Howley wasn’t. It wasn’t until about 10 years ago that I found out Howley was drafted by the Bears. He spent two seasons with the Bears.

Chuck "Hogmeat" Howley was drafted by the Bears in 1958 , two years before the Cowboys even existed. That's why we didn't draft him.

He played in 1958 and 59 for the Bears, then hurt his knee and missed the entire 1960 season. He ostensibly retired but the Cowboys gave the Bears two future draft picks for him, and he joined the Cowboys in the 1961 season, starting 13 out of 14 games.
