Wanted to post this because this guy is a true American hero. Band of Brothers is hands down my favorite mini-series ever and this embodies what this country should be all about. You will be a hero for generations Sgt Winters.

Dick Winters, a highly decorated World War II hero who became a household name when his heroics were chronicled in a Stephen Ambrose book that later became the HBO miniseries "Band of Brothers," has died. He was 92.
A very private and modest man, he died last week but requested that the news be withheld until after the funeral, a family friend told the Associated Press.
After enlisting in the Army on Aug. 25, 1941, the Pennsylvania native was deployed with fellow soldiers in Easy Company -- the 506th regiment of the 101st Airborne Division -- to land by parachute in France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. By leading the takeover of a German artillery bunker on Utah Beach, Winters and his company saved countless lives from relentless cannon fire -- an action that earned him the Distinguished Service Cross, the second-highest honor an American soldier can receive. Winters and Easy Company later fought near the Belgian town of Foy during the Battle of the Bulge, liberated the German concentration ca
mp at Dachau, and occupied Hitler's mountainside retreat, Eagle's Nest

In 1945, one of Winters' soldiers, Floyd Talbert, wrote a letter to Winters from his hospital bed to express appreciation for his leadership in battle.
"You are loved and will never be forgotten by any soldier that ever served under you," Talbert wrote. "I would follow you into hell."

R.I.P. Major Richard Winters.

You've certainly earned it.

"Currahee" - We stand alone, together......

He was just a rookie trooper and he surely shook with fright,
He checked off his equipment and made sure his pack was tight;
He had to sit and listen to those awful engines roar,
"He ain't gonna jump no more!"

Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?

Hate to hear that. I loved the series, and Major Winters brought back very fond memories of my grandfather who was in the 2nd Marine Division in Tarawa. RIP Sir.

Outside of Ken Burn's "Civil War", I consider Band of Brothers one of the best pieces of television ever created. The men who fought and died in each and every campaign of the WW2 were a rare breed indeed.

RIP Major Winters, the men you once led are surely welcoming you again.

My wife's father (she was a "surprise" for her parents...they're older) fought in the Pacific.

He never talkeed about the war. After his death, my wife found a box hidden away with all sorts of medals. One was earned after saving the life of a general that was visiting the troops. A Japanese soldier appeared out of nowhere and began firing on the general....my father-in-law killed the man. It apparently was something that affected him.

That generation truly rose to the occasion. Most of them are humble about their heroic actions.

Dick Winters was, by all accounts, a gentle man, but he did his duty. A truly great American.

I was fortunate enough to be at the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge Reenactment in Ft Indiantown Gap, PA in 1995. Dick Winters, who did not live far away, came to it. I was at the back of the room listening to him talk about his experiences in the Battle of the Bulge; and they got him to talk about D-Day. Riveting is not strong enough of a word. I could see why to a man every survivor years later saying and meaning it "If Dick Winters told us we needed to take Hell, we would have followed him right into it."
