But what is your favorite song (could be any type: from an artist's album, to a soundtrack to a movie or TV show) from each decade?

You can go back as far as you want. Example: 1920, 1930, 1940 and so on and so forth. Meaning the song has to be produced within a certain decade in order to qualify.

I think this would be an excellent exercise if your music tastes vary. Me personally, I don't stick to a certain genre or era of music. If something sounds good, I'll listen to it.

I'm too tired right now, and will do my list tomorrow, so you guys can start it off.

....

BTW this thread is encouraging you to actually go out there and research a little bit. Not to just post strictly the music that you have listened to before.

1940s -- "Always," which was featured in the movie "Pride of the Yankees," starring Gary Cooper. It reportedly was Lou Gehrig's favorite song. I've heard several people sing it, including Frank Sinatra and Billie Holliday.

1950s -- "Oh Boy!," by Buddy Holly. The song was written by a guy from Levelland, Texas, who was inspired by watching the cheerleaders at a Texas Tech football game, so the story goes. My other favorites from that decade are all Buddy songs -- "Maybe Baby," "It's So Easy," "Everyday," and "That'll Be the Day."

1960s -- "Stormy," by the Classics IV. An all-time favorite, which was very well done a decade later by Santana. Two other contenders are both instrumentals -- "Hawaii Five-0" by the Ventures, and "The Lonely Bull," by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. I also like two songs by the Beach Boys from that decade -- "Wouldn't it Be Nice," and "God Only Knows." Another great one: "Tears of a Clown," by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles.

1970s -- "Listen to What the Man Said," by Paul McCartney & Wings. This was a tough call -- so many good songs from that decade, but this one is so upbeat and has some great memories attached to it. Another contender is "Eyes of Silver," by the Doobie Brothers, as well as "Peg," by Steely Dan, "Who Loves You," by the Four Seasons, and "Red Barchetta" by Rush.

1980s -- "Unchained," by Van Halen is probably my favorite. Others: "Back on the Chain Gang," by the Pretenders, "The Big Money," by Rush, "Dreams" by Van Halen, "Girl Can't Help It," by Journey. The soundtrack to Lonesome Dove also came out at the very end of that decade and it's amazing.

1990s -- "Fields of Gold," by Sting. Just a beautiful song, and my second-favorite from that decade is a punch-in-the-face, adrenaline-fueled song called "Humans Being," by Van Halen. Also, "Smile," by Lyle Lovett, which was part of the "Hope Floats" soundtrack, and "True" by George Strait.

2000s -- "Game of Love," by Santana. Others include: "No Such Thing," by John Mayer, and "Vertigo" by U2.
