Besides winning the Heisman Trophy, serving in Vietnam, and leading the Dallas Cowboys to multiple Super Bowls during the ’70s, Roger Staubach also played college baseball on Navy’s varsity team. As a varsity baseball player He lettered in baseball three-straight years (1963-65) as an outfielder and pitcher. In 1963, he hit .420, and in 1965 he was the team captain. He also won a letter in basketball in 1962-63.

its a joke that he isnt even in most lists of top 10 QBs.honestly, im not sure there were 4 QBs in the history of the game that were better. What would he have done had he came into the nfl at age 22? IMO, the greatest leader in the history of the sport.

Most professional athletes are like that. It is hard to fathom how good these guys are. Hundreds of 1000s of high school players to 10s of 1000s of College players to like 1500 NFL players.
And that funnels down to the best players and takes a lot of them out of it. There are some exceptional athletes in the NFL.

But before there was Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders, there was Jim Thorpe, still regarded as the greatest American athlete of all time.

Some other amazing tidbits regarding Roger’s athletic ability:
  • Staubach is one of only 10 players to win the Heisman Trophy and also be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He’s also the only quarterback in the HOF who was also a Heisman winner.
  • Only 2 former Heisman QBs ever won the SB as a starting QB- Roger and Jim Plunkett.
  • Roger didn’t play QB in HS until his senior year. He was a DB before the head football coach noticed he had a great arm while playing baseball and then switched him to a QB.
  • Roger played his freshman year in college at a Junior College- New Mexico Military Academy where he earned NJCAA All-America honors in football, baseball and was all-conference in basketball.

Brady and Montana are the only two I acknowledge as better, so I still have Staubach 3rd all time.

Thorpe's versatility may never be matched.

Staubach beat Notre Dame in college. It would be 44 years before the next Navy QB could say the same thing.

He has earned more money than any other ex-NFL player in a non-football related field. He sold his real estate company in 2008 for 613 million. We can add that to his list of accomplishments.

I can't help but imagine if he played in today's NFL with the protection and the passing offenses. He would be a legend of Brady status.
