I was just listening to the Talking Cowboys show. Towards the end of the show and I mean exactly at the end, Mickey Spagnola told a very cool story about Roger Staubach.

In 1963 Roger was at Navy and won the Heisman Trophy. He was set to be on the cover of Life Magazine that year and several advance copies of the magazine were printed for souvenirs. Those magazines are now collectors items that are worth a small fortune. Roger never appeared on the actual publication of that edition of Life. Instead he was bumped off due to the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Apparently Mickey Spagnola saw one of these magazines and told Roger about it. Roger said he has a couple of them and further told Mickey that Navy almost did not accept the bid to play Texas in the Cotton Bowl for the National Championship because of the assassination, but was urged to by the Kennedy family.

John F. Kennedy was a Navy man. The Naval Academy was leery of the association with the town where he died, but the Kennedy family was not.

Have any of you ever seen a copy of that Life Magazine? Just curious.

Wow, the top story on that sidebar... Different times.
Tell me about it.

I did like the "Here Comes the Houdini of the Backfield" part though.

Oddly enough, Ted White is the guy who interviewed Jackie Kennedy after the assassination and coined the "Camelot" moniker.

Only pictures. Would be something to actually have one.

BTW, I imagine that one will make the book. Good story.

The weird thing is that not only did they drop Roger from the cover, but they spiked the profile of him as well. It wasn't in that issue or any subsequent issues.

From this article two amazing facts.

Information concerning this rare edition is sketchy, even on the internet, but indications are that there are likely less than 20 copies of this magazine extant.

What's even more amazing is that there are two versions of the magazine, one with the full photo of Staubach and one with the complete sidebar, both shown at right along with the issue (with Kennedy on the cover) that appeared on newsstands days later and was sent to subscribers.

Why do I get the feeling you are in the market for a certain magazine? :laugh2:

Probably just the quality of the picture taken of the cover that is doing it but the non-sidebar version looks a lot better.

Sidebar looks grainy and faded.

If I could find one I would pay that $600 mentioned in the article. Imagine one of those with Roger's autograph on it.
