The passing game has improved so much on 3rd down this year, that it really deserves a close look.

The NFL Ranks are team ranks in conversion percentage on pass plays. If you remove Weeden's 3rd-and-long passes, Dallas leads the NFL in that category.

3rd and short
(1-3 yards to go) NFL Rank: 6th

Code:
Romo 13 of 19 89 yd 5 td 0 int 13 fd 118.2 (65.0%)

Witten 5 of 7 38 yd 2 td 0 int 5 fd 123.8 (71.4%)
Bryant 2 of 2 15 yd 1 td 0 int 2 fd 137.5 (100.0%)
Escobar 2 of 2 9 yd 1 td 0 int 2 fd 125.0 (100.0%)
Beasley 2 of 3 9 yd 0 td 0 int 2 fd 70.1 (66.7%)
Williams 1 of 2 12 yd 1 td 0 int 1 fd 108.3 (50.0%)
Dunbar 1 of 2 6 yd 0 td 0 int 1 fd 56.3 (50.0%)

3rd and medium
(4-6 yards to go) NFL Rank: 10th
Code:

Bryant 7 of 11 109 yd 1 td 0 int 6 fd 126.7 (54.5%)

Escobar 2 of 2 38 yd 0 td 0 int 2 fd 118.8 (100.0%)
Murray 4 of 4 44 yd 0 td 0 int 2 fd 112.5 (50.0%)

Williams 0 of 2 0 yd 0 td 0 int 0 fd 39.6 (0%)

3rd and long
(7+ yards to go) NFL Rank: 4th
Code:
Romo 26 of 37 410 yd 1 td 1 int 18 fd 104.6 (42.9%)

Witten 7 of 8 76 yd 0 td 0 int 5 fd 106.3 (62.5%)

Romo to our tight ends on 3rd down:
20 of 24 207 yd 8.6 ypa 4 td 0 int 18 fd
142.1 rating
75% conversion rate

To tight ends on 3rd and long, we've converted on 6 of 9 targets, and averaged over 10 yards per attempt.

And if not for Tony Romo's injury against Washington, the Cowboys well could have beaten both Washington and Arizona, following that injury.

According to theses statistics we rank 4th - 10th in those three 3rd down conversion percentages.

My understanding, as well I'm sure the OP, as a whole team we are 1st in 3rd down conversion period....

That's a testament to getting yards on the ground to set up the 3rd and shorts and also our timely play making QB and skill position weapons on 3rd and longs.

Idk about the Washington game I think they had Dallas' number. The offense got a little outcoached

Yes, Dallas leads the league in conversion percentage on all 3rd down plays (1st by pass, 8th by run).
