Jul 1, 2010 - One of the bigger names in the 2010 free agent sweepstakes may be off the market. According to David Aldridge of NBA.com, the Grizzlies will re-sign Rudy Gay to a maximum contract extension.
Big, and breaking: Grizzlies commit to max deal for Rudy Gay, taking him off the market
ESPN's Marc Stein is reporting the contract is for five years and $80 million. This is the maximum Gay can make as a four-year player.
It's an odd decision, because the Grizzlies can afford to wait for someone to make an offer and then match it after seven days. There's really no incentive for the Grizzlies to do this right off the bat, even if the max is ultimately what it will take to retain him. At the same time, it would be a bummer if they lost him, because they gained some momentum last year and need to maintain that to keep their fans.
