Rumors arise of eventual Shanahan handoff
Posted by Mike Florio on April 8, 2010 11:33 AM ET
Looking for another reason why the Commanders would make a trade for a 33-year-old quarterback? Here's a fairly intriguing one.

There's a belief in some league circles that new coach Mike Shanahan, who'll celebrate his 58th birthday in August, hopes to eventually hand the whistle to his son, Kyle, the team's offensive coordinator. If so, it makes sense for the elder Shanahan to try to win sooner rather than later. Then, if/when Mike can pocket another Super Bowl win or two, Kyle can step in and take over the team.

Another natural ending point could be the retirement of new quarterback Donovan McNabb. When will that be? Shanahan recently said that he believes McNabb will be able to play indefinitely.

"Steve Young, John Elway, they went five years, six years past Donovan's age," Shanahan said, per Jason Reid of the Washington Post. "How long is Donovan going to play? I think the way he handles himself, the way he's built, that he probably can play as long as he wants to play. You've got to keep your fingers crossed.

"Is it five years? Is it six? Is it three? Well, I can't tell you for sure, but here's a guy who loves to play the game, who takes care of himself and hopefully he has the same passion in five years as he does right now and he can beat Brett Favre."

Of course, rumors of coaching succession plans are nothing new. It's far more rare that they actually come to fruition. In Washington, a Shanahan handoff will happen only if the one who currently runs the show is sufficiently successful to justify the eventual elevation of his son.

And if that happens, the elder Shanahan could stick around in a Parcells-style role.

wait till may when the dc media and the national media start telling us how incredible mcnabb is in washington and how washington is going to win the division.

It will be like when peter king left the skins camp in 08 and said campbell was the best qb in the east, then the skins fans went nuts and were showing up all over telling us how he was much better than romo.....

by the time we hit camp, the Commanders will be viewed as a 10 plus win team that is going to win the divsion.

adam shefter is going to talk that team up so much in the summer.

Well, to be fair, Parcells is pretty overrated as a personnel guy himself.

The Commanders need a strike to win the Bowl. Is there a chance for a strike with all the labor issues???

Basically Florio had nothing to write about, saw a thread on extremeskins about it and figured he'd write something

I just want to get to training camp of year 1 of the Mike Shanhan era, much less worry about when/if Kyle takes over

Na, we just need to play the Cowboys in the NFC title game to get to one ;)

You think so?

Because . . . D-Mac doesn't have that great a record in those things.

Will you score a TD then? And I don't mean your total points adding up to a TD either. In case you're feeling sneaky.

Survery from the NFC title games says YES!!

1972- Washington 26 Dallas 3

1982- Washington 31 Dallas 17

Going back to the topic at hand, I'm just trying to see what the roster going into training camp will be. While Kyle is certainly an intruiging coaching prospect, one year of leading the top passing offense does not neccessarily a head coach make.

This time 2004, people were saying Gregg Williams would be the heir to Gibbs' throne

well based on probability, the Skins have to have a greater chance of winning the SB than the Eagles, Lions, and Texans.

Wholeheartedly disagree. The Eagles, Lions, and Texans aren't giving away draft picks like gov't cheese.
